Seriously speaking, though, I agree with what you're saying. I've never found being a little rude with a lady has ever been a problem, personally, but I think the context is important. Being too suggestive and talking like you're coming on to her really quickly is always going to get someone a bit defensive. Online is different to real life too, because you just haven't got any sense of whether there might be chemistry there like you do in real life, where it is a lot easier to judge the situation and the moment.

The only time I dismiss message from men (I like to be polite and chat back whether I fancy them or not..) is when they message saying:

'wanna meet for love'
'text me baby on this number...'
'wanna pose naked in my house and let me take photos of you.. I'll pay you' (whilst being 50 odd years old)
'hi'
or
'hi hows you'

Yes I have plenty of all these messages to go around for all the women on this forum.. I'm not trying to toot my own horn here but (due to being on here along time)) I have a fair amount of messages.. about 2 thirds of them relate to what was said above. I've been on here SUCH a long time, that I have recieved around 850 messages of the same like to the above, (only mentioning numbers to let you men know why you need to make an effort lol.. we want something abit different and interesting not trying to make it sound like I have a big head at all - please dont think that of me at all!!!!) and the rest have only had to say more than 'hi hows you wat u up2?' to get a reply.

I hope this makes you realise why some women can be reluctant to answer.. A nice long message telling us about yourselves and making a joke or two will surely get you an answer.. no picture needed!

I reply to about 1 in 20 messages, most get deleted before they are read, I reason like this:

If you are nearly as old as my dad, your message is deleted
If you say "hi" it is deleted
If you say "u on msn" it is deleted
If you say "x" is it deleted
If you say "nice pics" it is deleted
If your profile says nothing about you it is deleted
If you do not have a picture it is deleted - harsh but come one, surely you can get a picture on here somehow! If you're not willing to show your face, you#re hiding something and I do not like that. the other excuse is "I've got some on MSN but on not on here, is just a lame way of trying to get my MSN.

If you send me a message which is interesting, comments on life, my profile, or something I can reply to, then generally I will reply!

There are loads of boys per girl here, and what it means is you have to make a real effort if you want a reply, if you just say "hi" then don't expect any answer!

I have received over 500 message since I have been on here, and I have given out my MSN 5 people, 3 are blocked. that's makes it pretty clear how hard I am to catch...

Question for the women: What is wrong with something short and meaningless such as "how are you" as the first message?

Basically it is just like a "wink" to check out whether women are interested (this is what most men do)....if you are interested and reply with something meaningless to, he is quite likely to write something more meaningful in the second messages.

I think you should not judge a guy by the first message...rather by the second message or what's on his profile.

If you are not interested in a guy, there is no point that he spends half an hour on writing a long and meaningful message if you just don't even bother to read the message after looking at the profile picture for example.....

It's not arrogant, you are in the majority, we are the minority, so if you want to talk, you have to make an effort, clearly you can't be bothered to, so why should I?

When I get messages like that I feel like you are just spamming us, to see who will respond, what you have said is "look at me" rather than "I have looked at you, read your profile and found you interesting, I think we might have something in common, so why don't we talk?"
