My experience is that long distance relationships work until you change them.

All the while you're seeing each other one weekend in two (or whatever) and have a fairly consistent pattern to seeing each other it ticks along nicely. But then you reach a point where one/both of you decide 'we want to take this relationship to the next level'.

This generally involves one party relocating to live with the other, realising that their new housemate isn't the little bundle of perfection they were when they saw each other 2 days out of 7, one of you resenting the others demands for attention on drinking/band/soccer practice night, and whichever one of you moved really missing their friends.

Arguments and unpleasantness generally ensue. The only couple I've ever known make a successful transition from long distance to co-habiting, moved somewhere completely new when they decided to live together, and they're still happily co-habiting now.
