I really fancied him and he always blushed when we were at the bus stop together... but I didn't know back then that guys his age might have liked me too.

Another one. She literally kept calling herself "bad news" every other sentence during the first (and last) date. I've always been one for honesty, but that's taking it to extremes!

She was green and I was orange.
I should have seen it, shouldn’t I?
I didn’t know what the signals meant.
Did she mean go? Did I mean Whoa?

Family and friends chipped in their 2 cents:
My vicar, Rev. Tangerine, said, ‘She’s the Ecological Church and you’re The Church of the Latter Day Fruit.’
Clementine, my mum said, ‘She’ll be off, saving the planet, son. You’ll be left in the kitchen making up a sauce for duck or salmon.’
Emerald, her mum said, ‘She’s the dew on the early morning grass of innocence. But you, orange skin, are the glowing coal from the fires of hell and damnation.’
‘She’ll be voting for ‘Bikes for All’ and you’ll be voting LibDem, or is it DemLib,’ my dad, Mandarin said.
‘She’s a sage cream, you’re a cheddar, but what’ll those poor babies be: stiltons!’ Satsuma, my aunt said.

I couldn’t or wouldn’t see it. She looked healthy and natural to me.
I looked warm and exciting to her. Isn’t that what love does?

But our mutual invisible 6ft rabbit friend, Harvey Wallbanger Pooka, kept us apart.
One day she looked at me and said, ‘Jesus! You’re orange, you are! And Pooka doesn’t like you any more!’ And she walked away.
I staggered around thinking, ‘But I’ve always been orange.’

Yeah, the worst 8th birthday I ever had.
I missed that bloody rabbit, but I kept looking out for him. I still imagine I see him sometimes.

(The names and meanings have been changed to protect the innocent and the guilty. Also it’s a long time ago and – with all the passing time, the forgotten pain, and the confusions of a lifetime – I may have got some things jumbled up!)
