It may not be just "black or white" but there is only one simple distinction between cheating on a partner and not cheating on a partner. Circumstances may indeed vary - but that doesn't stop the act being unfaithful, just because of your situation.

surfing the net enabled me to stumble across an interesting way to look at things...

We need to understand, that sex is natural where relationships may not be.??? Sex is required through out our "animal kingdom", in particularly to those that belong to the "Mammal Species", which we do, for the continuation of the species. The rules are very very simple. Males being larger in size, is meant to dominate the female to pass on his genes, and move on to the next female . The female will accept his genes with no questions asked, because her "sexual blue prints" is to be maternal. I know you will all be saying, "we're not animals, we are civilized and intelligent humans". Yes, that is true, but, with everything a modern human has done to change his existence from the early development of being a primate, we have not changed the basic "blue print" on sexuality with the rest of the animal kingdom.

So, committed relationships and marriages are imposed on us by religion and societal pressures. To achieve this, they needed to control the females "sexual needs" by shaming her, unless she exercised her sexuality in a committed relationship. As our society moves further away from religion, as it has been the case for the last half century or so, young ladies want to exercise their "maternal instincts", that is in their "sexual blue print". Biologically they are doing what's natural, but in the eyes of the "religious society", they are "whores". To be crude, "if she is old enough to bleed, she is old enough to breed". That is the rules of nature, and not mine. Someone once said, " but Ducks have a committed relationship (monogamous) with each other", in which I replied, "well, that's because they don't live long enough to be bored with each other".

So, extra marital affaires, cheating on ones partner will continue, because of our "sexual blue print" that is within us all.
