What is the difference between a geek and a nerd?

From my understanding - which is prolly wrong - a geek is a computer anorak, and a nerd is just a, well, moron - perhaps intelligent in some sad way but cant hold a conversation with a chimp or punch his way out of a wet paper bag?

My mate Chris knows a lot of pointless stuff, but isn't really very computer orientated. Does that make him a nerd?

If he knows alot about any particular topic, he's an anorak. If he knows little about everything, and lots about nothing, then a nerd maybe? But he's your friend, you like him so maybe he's just a nice generic geeky anorak?

I do want to beat him senseless when he goes on about cricket. Possibly he is an anorak.

Sounds great. Do you programme for certain things? Examples being some Youtube videos - one robot that walks like say a deer and when falling calculates how to put itself upright. It's amazing stuff, but very loud.

For work I'm sorting out code to run machines but not on the real time side of things, more along the lines of creating lists of instructions for a manufacturing machine. Similar to creating a set of instructions for a computer controlled milling machine.

...as for the bots it's just something I've always been interested in and I finally found some computer/sensor/servo interface stuff that doesn't cost crazy money so have only just started on that side of things. Having to learn C for it too. I now realise how good I've had it with writing in python so far!

my b/f is a computer geek... but he's also outgoing and funny and when with his mates, a hell of a party animal... it doesn't compute Wink

I used to be a bit geeky but I'm not really interested now. I consider myself the antidote to the situation - in other words at a loud party I stand in the corner quietly, and in a boring situation I pluck humour out of thin air. People don't get me

I'm a geeky dude, heck I even mention it on my profile. I think the whole geek/nerd thing is misunderstood though, see though i'm doing a computing course I hate programming and all that crap. I am however very in to games, movies all that stuff. I also go out socialising a lot so *shrugs*.

I would say the nerds are the ones who are more super into computers and talking world of warcraft speak(I cant tolerate all the people on my course going on and on about world of warcraft, gawd it winds me up.) Geeky cool dudes for the win!

(however it seems having the word 'geeky' in your about me section on any dating site is not a good way to win ladies over i'm discovering :/)

Java...urgh evil language. Capital letters here, spacing there, syntax errors all round lol. I seriously don't enjoy programming at all. In my first year at uni I was actually doing computer games technology for my degree but it was way too programming orientated, and not enough visuals. So I've switched now to computer animation & visualisation instead for my second year...use 3ds max etc now yet I dont seem to be able to escape Java courtesy of one of my modules Sad. Oh god I've turned the thread into a tech thread! Cntrl+alt+delete, cntrl+alt+delete damn it! lol

Women love geeks! I'm a 2025th level Magus with the power of Herbology in Dungeons and Dragons, I'm just waiting to roll a double six to find the illusive 'clitoris'.
