Would have to agree with Baz
....if you want to be her friend...then be nice and say nice things
if you want to be her lover then tell her that shes sexy and go for the smooch....if shes let you into her space to get 'close' enough to kiss her shes not likely to give you a slap....
Of course sometimes some shallow people just use the 'friend' excuse because they dont find you attractive....if your not getting any signals what so ever...then friends is all you'll ever be...... and by the way the friend excuse works both ways.....for girls too

You answered your own question- if you like being nice, then be nice! Don't change and become an asshole because you think it will help you find a girl. I would much rather have a guy that is too nice (if there is such a thing as being "too nice") than a guy who treats me like dirt. You'll find a girl who will appreciate you for the nice guy that you are.
It is really sad that being too nice is seen as a problem!
