It does matter on the net, probably more then real life. I've seen a lot of hypocrisy when this is discussed. People come out with the old platitude 'age doesn't matter', then in the next sentence 'but...'.

Age does matter on the net, most women put 50 as a cut off point and that includes women in their 50's.

I've suffered plenty of ageism on here, especially in 'Fun & Games' and the 'love' sections, that's why I don't go in them anymore.

Proves a point that I'm probably the only man over 50 that's stuck around...and I'm largely ignored.

I know I've said plenty on these type of threads already but coming to jeggae's perspective of searches on the web, I DO think he's right.

I KNOW there is ageism and some sites seem to be worse than others and I'm just as guilty of it on some sites too where you have to be more precise on age searches.

One site in particular, I was ruled out for being over 50 by too many of the men I would have liked and the way the site functioned, they wouldn't have even seen me as I didn't meet their initial criteria. It was a paying site too, so I didn't stay on it long.

In 3 months time I think I will be having a new perspective to share on this issue.

Its probably much worse for men, as there's not enough women to go around, and we [over 50's] know we don't feature in many women's searches. This applies to the vast majority of sites.

But I've never really bothered with the dating side anyway, and only ever been interested in the discussion boards.

But I've had plenty of digs about my age, been accused of being a pervert, and been ignored.

Maybe its me, maybe not. But over 50 men don't stick around on here for long.

Okay, I can understand much younger women not wanting to get involved with me. But when women nearer my own age have ageist digs and ignore, its not good and definitely spoils my experience on here.

To me net dating tends to be false, shallow and fickle anyway, so isn't for me. But it does get me down when people pretend to be 'friends' then have digs on the discussion board.

but luckily I can do without so called friends, have plenty in the real world.

BTW I yearn to be a silver fox, but my hair decided to fall out teen years ago. But then it does mean I can remove any evidence of my great age [/b]

Well, I am over 50 and I dont get ignored (much!!).
I dont get many replies either, but what the heck. I enjoy the banter on the chat and on some of the forums !
If I do get a GF or a date through the site then its a plus, but not a must.

I think people having digs about others on the forums is nasty, and I wouldn't want to know them in the real world either.

Like you jeggae the forums are what I enjoy best about fbx and I do feel that some of the friends I have made from them are special and despite the fact that I've never met them before, I do feel like I know them.

If you want me to be perfectly honest Sue, I don't always read to much into so called friendships off the net now.

Its okay chatting to people on these type sites/forums and even meeting up 2-3 times a year, and bandying the word 'friend' about. But how many are really friends?

You don't really know them in my opinion.

I've met a few from another site, all claiming to be 'friends' but some have let me down even lied, and a couple have been okay.

I got caught up in it, but internet friends come and go from my experience.

I know what you're saying, and I guess the majority are as you describe, but I do know the quality of an on line friendship by the one s that are there when you need them. I have quite a few who I've been friends with for 3 yrs now from when I first came onto the web. It will be interesting to see how many of them will come to see my art exhibition at the end of May, then again I am off the beaten track.

I really dont see the problem, age is only a number, if you like a person and they like you , then it really shouldnt matter if theres an age gap or not
