With my new pc I have been given the option to take part in a program run by HP to upgrade to Windows 7.

Since I see no cost mentioned in the literature i assume it will be free to me. I just wondered if anybody else has tried or will be trying Windows 7 and if so what their opinions are/will be? I know its not on general release until October but sometimes people get it before that as testers or illegally, whatever.

Will you be upgrading? if so, why?

It's a freebie but has an expiry date, after which, you can't use it at all. It means a re-install of your old OS when it expires.

Personally, I wouldn't go near it. M$ release an OS with enough bugs as it is so opting to have an even more bugged OS on my PC is not my first choice.

However, it's your choice and not mine.

I’ve been using Windows 7 for a few months now (both Beta and RC1) and its way better than Vista and actually uses about the same processor power and RAM as XP does. Have had no problems with it at all. As far as bugs go, I’d say that it the production release is likely to have less bugs than )say) Vista, since Windows 7 is basically what Vista should have been (meaning they’ve have time to iron out most of the bugs and make improvements).

HP offer a free upgrade to Windows 7 on any PC/laptop bought after a certain date (I think the eligible upgrade purchase date is June or July onwards) but I think you have to pay a nominal charge for the hard copy of the discs and postage.

Personally, I’d say that if your new PC has Vista on it, take advantage of the upgrade to Windows 7, it’s far more stable than Vista ever was/is. Apart from a few teething problems with third party firewalls and anti-virus apps when it was in early Beta (now sorted), I’ve had absolutely no problems with it at all, and all my software runs flawlessly under it (inlcuding the complete Adobe Master Collection)

Despite my relative enthusiasm for Windows 7 (above), if one is going to use Windows, nothing beats a fresh installation of XP with SP3 and all the right drivers (as I’ve just done on my main PC).

I agree there.

My only gripe is that they stopped compatibility for DOS so my old games won't run any more. Dosbox runs them but the movie cut scenes like those in Wing Commander etc play at 6x speed and I can do nothing to slow them down. Pity, because I have a lot of old DOS based games that I'd still like to play including the Elite series, Frontier and First Encounter.

If windows 7 has the same footprint and gives you no problems though, how is XP better? Windows 7 has more features than XP doesnt it?

Windows 7 still feels slower than XP, but it is certainly faster than vista and contains new features, so overall I feel that it's worth it. I have it on my desktop PC, got it free from my university .

Saying that though, on my netbook that I take into uni I installed a stripped down version of XP pro, and mac OS leopard, both of which run a lot better than windows 7 (which i later removed) and increase the battery life by quite a lot.

Every piece of technology has its place.

I recently installed Windows 7, and for now I'm very pleased with it. If you wont to upgrade your computer I would recommended Windows 7
