Here's one link to a load of free software, and in general I agree with the site that these are the best to offer I use most of em.

I think cheeky is just looking for recommendations as to free Antivirus/Firewall solutions for Windows rather than a full blown induction into the GNU/FSF world and Linux!
The two free Antivirus solutions that people seem to recommend are Avast! and AVG. Personally I favour Avast! But different people like different ones. I wasn't aware until recently that the AOL scanner is based in Kapersky which everytime I check the results tables seems to come top.
For Firewalls, the easiest software one is probably Zone Alarm. Sygate used to be good but Symantec took them over and shut down development so its not really safe using a discontinued product that will never get updated. I used Kerio for a while too.

Hey Ian and Beddo .... i'm crap with computers ... all i know is my norton is due to run out in 27 days .... HHHEEELLLPPPPP

Simple version:
This will remove Norton.
Pick this or this and install the free antivirus.
Then pick this or this as a free firewall.
I'd also suggest this as an anti-spyware solution.
