The summary is: avoid using Internet Explorer until Microsoft releases an emergency fix. If you don't have an alternative I recommend using IE to install Firefox or Chrome, finding the download location via Google. Definitely avoid visiting dodgy sites with IE at the very minimum.

| Users of the world's most common web browser have been advised to switch to a rival until a serious security flaw has been fixed.
The flaw in Microsoft's Internet Explorer could allow criminals to take control of people's computers and steal their passwords, internet experts say. Microsoft is investigating the problem and preparing an emergency software patch to resolve it, it says. |

Nothing new there then
But most browsers have exploitations. I think IE users are often targeted more than other web browser users because, often for the very fact that they’re unknowledgeable, the average Joe Bloggs IE user is pretty much an easy target – it is widely accepted that most people who might be using an unpatched or out-of-date browser probably doesn’t even have a decent firewall on their computer, if they have one at all, and in their naivety know or care little about online security ..... until the shit hits the fan, then they’ll blame everyone else for their misfortune.

Aye (edited), IE is notoriously unsafe because it is the most targeted system used by the least skilled users.
However there remains a number of risks with this situation that might not be immediately apparent.
* A typical person's facebook account probably has enough information for identity theft. This information could be harvested and sold in bulk.
* Accounts on sites that hold customer's debit or credit card, could be used to extract these details or to make purchases.
* Someone could use an account to spam scams to your contacts, hoping they'd follow "your" advice.
Essentially the potential for mischief is quite considerable.
