I have posted a thread about skype yesterday here:

http://www.flirtbox.net/computers_hardware_and_software/skype-offline-.html

I am not 100% sure whether it is true or not - but I have heard that Skype was not "offline" but clients could not connect to it anymore, due to a Windows update.

So did Microsoft exploit its monopoly by disabling Skype in order to drive the people to MSN messenger?

That would be really harsh.....

If I owned Microsoft stocks I would sell them now before they are sued by Skype....

microsoft would have to admit to it first.

It wouldn't be the first time, if they have used dirty tricks, so i wouldn't be surprised.

In any case, why use skype's version of voip anyway, when there's an open standard used by a wide range of providers?

This thread was dated quite a while ago so would explain why it's working fine...

It was actually a problem with skype though. It was a big problem for them considering they are trying to sell their product to businesses as a full on VoIP solution to companies. It was basically down for 2 or 3 days, not what a company is going to trust to run their telephony services...

It was probably something to do with the Windows Firewall installed on SP2. It probably was blocking skype.
