Ok, I shall be serious. META TAGS and ROBOTS TEXT are what you're wanting. Google, Yahoo, Msn Search etc send robots over the web picking up the insides of your HTML. If you have a "robots follow" in each page then you'll get listed quicker.

Other things like to trawl the web too, like email harvesters so do try to obscure your email address on any websites that you create.

Google has the clues for all these. Smile

Google for information on SEO - search engine optimisation. That's not being rude, it's just not my strongest subject.

Also you can submit your site to some of the search engines too.

There's lots you can do, but some of it depends on how your site works, and what it is about.

Other sites linking to it helps, too, the more that link to it the more important it is considered.

Your web designer should have added the META TAGS that 8legs mentioned. To be honest, these tags play a less important role with SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) than they used to, but still very useful. I could waffle on for hours about this, but won’t, and there are whole shelves of books written about this subject - trust me, I had to read a lot of them :- ).

Relevant page titles are also a good idea for your site, as are what is known as alt tags and titles for any images on your site, and I noticed that many sites don’t have them. The list of things you could do to improve the search results is almost endless! For realistic tips and useful info, type SEO or Search Engine Optimisation into Google.

Speaking about Google, also worth heading to http://www.google.com/webmasters and http://www.google.com/intl/en/submit_content.html for basic SEO tips and submission for inclusion in Google's own indexing of your site. These things don't happen overnight though, don't expect to see any changes in search results for about 6 weeks. And then you'll need to do constant tweaking of the site, tags and page content to get better results.

One excellent place to start with for getting your site indexed by search engines is to add it to a well known directory, like http://dmoz.org

So, you're telling me that Google are sending robots out via the internet to pick at my HTML(?). And I suppose the FBI were behind the Kennedy shooting, Shergar's still alive and there were aliens at Roswell.

Some people...

you can go to the search engines and suggest your site or use a search engine submitter I use webceo, Also go and find as many directories as you can and list in a catorgory appropriate to the subject of your site. ( this gets you list faster in search engines as all directories are regularly spidered by search engines ) to find directories just do a search for directory lists on any search engine. Also try link exchanges but make sure to link to sites with simular subjects.

Also search for the subject of your webbsite on major search engines and just send the websites a request for a link exchange explaining that linking to sites with the same sort of content will help with the ranking of both your sites so it's beneficial to both.

then there's pay per click ( google ads etc ) ( can get expensive )

and dont forget try some offline advertising.

Avoid many marketing / guaranteed traffic sites as they just do pop ups / unders for the most part and very rarely give good visitors.
