It's hard to diagnose faults without seeing exactly what happens but it *sounds* like your graphics card driver maybe corrupted. Do you have ANYTHING on your monitor when you start the pc or try to install windows? If you get a picture but it then goes off, it suggests that everything is ok and Windows is corrupting the driver.

If the monitor is completely dead:
1. Check the lead between your pc and monitor. Make sure it's plugged in properly, the little screws are tight and that the cable is not damaged.
2. If the monitor displays a message like "No signal" or whatever, then the monitor itself is ok and not recieving anything from the pc.
3. When you first start the pc, do you see the black screen with writing on it? You'll probably hear a single "beep" aswell. If so, you can start the pc in Safe Mode by repeatedly tapping F8. Safe Mode is Windows in it's most basic state.
4. If you've started the pc in Safe Mode and everything is working ok, that would suggest a program you have installed has corrupted the graphics card driver. Favourite for this is anything you installed around the time the problem started, in particular any pc games as they mess around with graphic card settings. You can uninstall programs from Safe Mode.

EDIT:
This could also be virus related if you're using the internet without any security. Anti virus programs should be updated regularly otherwise they're as much use as a smoke alarm with no battery. You should also have a firewall to stop hackers getting into your pc. You may already have security but thought i'd mention it because i regularly repair pc's with viruses due to users having no security programs.

Fan running fine
no beep
no signal on monitor screen and goes to standby mode
no graphics whatsoever

I did have mcafee anti virus, zonealarm firewall and bps spyware and adware remover.

It is now packaged and ready to throw out of the window UT

Hell, you've done a PROPER job there! Surprised

That black screen and single beep i mentioned is the "POST" screen which is your pc testing all the hardware components. This happens wayyyy before windows loads. A single beep indicates everything is ok. There are then various morse code type beeps which indicate errors, such as a continuous beep = bad memory stick. Your pc will not start unless the POST test is ok.

So the next question is, do you get ANY sound when you first power on/start the pc? If not, it suggests a knackered mother board although could be several things.

Are the lights ok on the front of the pc? There's usually a power on light and a hard disk light that may flash. If these are off,the power supply could be shot although the fan in the power supply can still work ok.

If you've given up on it and plan on buying a new pc, stick it on eBay and describe the fault, you'll often get £50+ because people buy it for spares/repair.

Hey I don't do things by halves I gotta do a proper job or its not worth doing lol. There is definately no sound whatsoever when I switch it on and the lights work ok, so I presume like you said the motherboard. Will give it a go on ebay see what happens as its no use to me just now. Thanks for your help and enjoy the sunshine. x

Have you added any new hardware recently to your computer, its not uncommon for hardware on the motherboard can conflict each other, also bad memory can also be a problem, i kow its an expensive option, but maybe tryin new memory, or tryin to get your computer back to how it was when you fist got it, try what someone else mentioned and use a win98 disk, or possibly the processor, my honest first impression guess would be the processor or bad memory, but then again i could be completely off the mark, been a few years since i worked on computers

If you really want to save money.. take it to someone who knows what they are doing. Though if you are feeling confident:

-Take out all your ram and start the machine up. If it doesnt let out any beeps because of no ram, then your motherboard is stuffed.
-If it does beep, put the ram in back in (1 stick at a time if there's more than one) and reboot every time for each stick.
-If you still have no luck, unplug all the unnecessary hardware like drives and sound card etc which will eliminate some possibilities.
-If while doing all that works, add hardware back one piece at a time until you get where you were before.

Please note, removing hardware is always done when the machine is off.

erm you forgot to mention that you should earth yourself in case of stray electrical charges still in the machine lmao wouldn't want anyone electrocuting themselves eh.

i think it has to be either the system board or the CPU if there was a graphics card error there would be beeps coming from the system units same for the memory too. if there is nothing then that is due to a hardware error for some reason eg cpu is burned out or over clocked in bios, the motherboard is faulty or the PSU could be faulty too if it’s a Pentium 4 model. it might be an idea to open the case up and look for the clear cmos jumper switch as it might be in the open position or not witch can cause the pc to respond like this if left open it is usually located on the system board or motherboard usually near what looks like a small battery (but remember to protect your self against static ESD just make sure that u are earthed to the case either by touching the bear metal or using a electro static wrist strap very cheep to buy. Either way from what I have been reading the cmos jumper switch would be the next best idea towards fixing this
PS if it’s a Pentium 4 model check the cables going from the PSU power supply unit to the motherboard make sure cables are connected ok or try another PSU. Apart from that if no joy still my advice is to get a new motherboard or processor dependant on what is Brocken you may need both .
