Today I brought a 19in lcd tv, with the intention of using it as a laptop monitor.. (but cant find my lead to connect at the moment, so cant test)

can a tv be used as a good monitor? Or should I just buy a monitor?!

It can be used as a monitor, but it might depend on whether it has the right connection at the back for the lead you need - some TV's do, some don't. Oh, how well it works as a monitor might also depend on the resolution of the TV. Chet is your man for info on that Laughing

I use my old 19" computer monitor with my laptop when at home now; I suppose I could just look for a 19" laptop, but I can't imagine lugging that around with me. Besides, then I'd want to hook it up to my 23" monitor, then I might as well just get a 23" laptop, etc, etc, etc. Not that I've seen any 23" laptops, mind.

I'm thinking of getting a 42" laptop to use as a home cinema

I think you might be able to use a 4-pin S-video cable running from your 7-pin TV-OUT socket on your laptop

If you have a 15 pin monitor-out socket on your laptop (usually blue), and the same on the TV, that would work too. There are other cables as well, that would run from the 15 pin socket to 4-pin S-video I think.

If you're bringing your laptop when you come to visit, we'll go shopping in Maplins

I've not even seen any 19" laptops tbh.

As for the LCD tv, do you only want to use it as a monitor? If so yeah you'd have been better off getting a monitor probably cheaper.

There's no VGA port by the looks of things, so won't be very easy to hook up.

If you use a tv out on the laptop I think it will restrict the output to a rather unsatisfactory PAL output resolution.

I've bought from these before and been very pleased with them.

Oh bugger.. I did go to buy a monitor, but saw this tv on sale (£129.00) (£117.00 with staff discount!)

Think I'll just swap it for a pc monitor tomorrow..

I saw a couple of 19” laptops in Dixons ages ago – can’t remember what brand they were, but they were definitely 19”.

I’m sure I’ve also seen VGA to 4-pin S-video cables – quality might not be that good though. I’m inclined to agree on getting a dedicated monitor though (which Curraghmore can get cheap at work ), but checking what ports there are on the laptop first.

You can probably get a reasonable 21 " or 22" monitor for that price. If you want something with a crisp display for watching DVD's on (yeh, I know what you get up ), see if you can find a Samsung, they're really good value for money; I just saw some nice 19" Samsungs in Staples for £79!

Well, I'm keeping the TV for now, Col's down for the weekend so he's bringing some different leads to try..

If that don't work, then it's a choice between these 2..

Yep that's definitely the key point here.
