OK I might be being stupid but how do you steal your own Internet?

A friend came round once to fix my pc, he brought his laptop and using netstumbler his laptop could "see" my net, and we were able to use it on his laptop. Thats what Im trying to recreate for my laptop, for it to see my internet.

If you have a wireless AP you shouldn't need netstumbler to be able to see it, depending on what sort of router, AP etc you are using. You should be able to detect it using the standard tools that come with your operating system/wireless NIC. Unless, that is, whoever configured your network turned off the ssid broadcasts.

Thanks cheeky - Ive effed it up so now its a £400 portable dvd player Sad

Kebabman: I dont have a cable router thingy, I has this idea I could piggy back off my connection with netstublmer - but then I installed the WLAN, and tried to set up a network between the two but in doing so it set itself a router IP and I lost my dhcp, but I managed to reset back. So yeah my laptop now is sat on the floor playing a metallica dvd - lovely graphics but fack else going on. I think I'll have to get a cable WR and do it properly. Oh I forgot, the AP said it has an excellent connection at 100mphs - no idea whats going on, but either way nothing is happening.

the only way to use the net on your laptop is either with a direct connection to the net or thru a router ( ur cable/phoneline connects to router then ur computer is connected to the router) if u have 1 or when u get 1 ul need to access the routers setting . u do this by typing the routers address in ur firefox/IE address bar (routers address will b supplied with router or else by ur isp). once accessed u can change things like ur routers firewall settings etc etc and u can set up a wireless conn! the routers also hand cos it also lets u hook up ur laptop to your computer! Very Happy Rolling Eyes hope dat helps?

Beware! You can get nicked for using someone elses wifi connection.
If using a router, always

1) Enable password protection ( as much help as a chicken on one leg )
2) Enable mac address security ( very good, but not uncrackable )
