XP barely keeps up on 256 after running more than a day or so after you get the necessary drivers and other windows crap loaded on it to keep it stable than soon you will start hearing the grinding of the HDD (page file mechanizism ... again a microsux memory work around). I suggest no less than 512 and as mentioned previously with memory being so cheap why not jump to 1g...btw AMD 2400 you will likely being needing the DDR type ram...if in doubt shut your machine down, unplug the power cord (you should, although most don't, discharge and ground yourself before working on anything inside a PC) and take the current stick of ram out and bring that it (memory stick) to your local PC shop and tell them what you want.

good luck and happy learning

I'd have to echo the advise given, 1GB would be the best bet. I run with 1GB and have no problems.

Si

I'd have to agree with what Beddo said earlier. I was running with one gig for about six months and couldnt really see the point, the difference from 512 to one gig is almost non exsistant unless, your really good at multitasking and have a duel core processor I really cant see the point.
Though less than 512 sucks!

i am using an AMD64 3200 processor, 1gb of ram, i often have large applications open such as adobe photoshop cs2 whilst i listen to music, download stuff using bit torrent as well as browse the net. when i was just running this machine on 512mb ram i found it a bit sluggish at starting applications up, but since adding the extra ram to take it to 1gb i have found things alot quicker and for the price i paid for the extra ram, id say it was a worthy upgrade.

Can I ask what motherboard you're using?

If you're using something like Azureus and CS2 at the same time then of course you will benefit from extra memory. Both of those are quite resource hungry apps. Even the lighter bittorrent clients need a fair few resources due to the number of connections they hold open. The majority of people who just browse the net and check their email/use IM won't have those kind of requirements though.

Yep probably, I only asked cos some mobos have dual memory bands which means putting another stick of memory in doubles the bandwith!

memory these days is one of the cheapest parts you can buy, and having more than you need is never a bad thing, why cause a bottleneck on something so cheap?

i have 4Gb, true most of it aint used but you can bet your life im not gonna get a bottleneck coz of it.

Actually my RAM was £150 per 1GB lol, but what i was getting at was that 1gb costs peanuts these days and the boost when it comes to needing it is well noticed Smile

Hell yeah, seen as I've now got a certain amount of guaranteed money coming in I'll be saving up for:

1) A new, stupidly expensive acoustic guitar (need to get to shops to try some out).
2) A decent amp and effects box for my electric guitar (need to figure out what yet)
3) Rust removal and engine rebuild on the mini

It'll probably by 2 then 1 with 3 being a neverending battle!

As to bottlenecks, well I really don't care about waiting a couple of seconds here or there for things. Heck I got paid today to spend half an hour listening to hold music Smile

Sounds more worthwhile than 3 and a half gig of ram
