OK, this might help troubleshoot the problem. Try an alternative msn-clone. What we're trying to rule out here, is whether or not there's something wrong with the installed version of MSN.

Download this alternative, and see if that can login or not. If that one cannot either, despite being freshly installed, then the firewall may well need re-visiting. It is the most likely culprit when everything else is working & the internet is otherwise fine.

Thanks CharmingDave........ I tried 2 different things.....

went onto the link you gave me..... tried downloading live msn again and repair.... after doing all of that for 1/2 hour and re-booting......it didn't solve the problem.

Tried clicking on the amsn and downloading that.....said it was downloading and I clicked on run and then nothing.

I think I might give up.... I am so not a technical person.

Tried surfing the internet to get any help but none of the stuff other people had posted worked either Sad

Thanks anyway

Computers suck sometimes. Good luck in sorting it out. I'd probably sort it easily if I was there :s

In the meantime, try this link to get your msn fix.

http://webmessenger.msn.com/

It's a web browser version of msn, that will let you talk to people.

Yeah, I know how it goes. My main suspicion is your firewall, they can be funny things sometimes. Actually, computers generally can be, and that's coming from a self-appointed know-it-all. I'm sorta lucky in being good at fixing it when it goes wrong, but I'd rather not! Thankfully, mine is well tamed

Checked my firewall......that was another learning curve for me...lol..... but msnmsgr.exe is on my fully approved list so it should be ok. Also tried the troubleshooting thingy but that didn't give me the option to replair but just suggested a couple of other things which didn't work. Weird thing is, msn was working fine an hour before my problems from work. Got home and switched on home pc and it wouldn't connect and now work laptop doesn't want to know msn either which makes me think its something to do with my broadband connection! Although obviously I am connecting as I am on here...... maybe its having a blonde moment like me

>1 computer having a problem does seem to indicate it's not the computer or firewall, this is true.

That's got me onto another idea, though. If they connect at the same time through a router, try giving the router a reboot to see if that helps. I have seen routers "forget" how to connect to one or a small number of remote destinations in the past. This doesn't mean it's the router's fault if this trick works, by the way, it could be many things.

You're never alone on the internet, you just have to know where to go. Other people have helped me and taught me stuff on a regular basis, and still do.

My friend - it is a bug. I had it and still got it but it also happened with Yahoo msngr. History here. When my ISP cut off my Broadband, I began to use my NOKIA 6300 Cell fone (mobile) hooked via USB to my PC. For three weeks it worked fine - then both failed to login. I work in IT Solutions and know what I am doing with a puter. But after 3 weeks of conference with the MSN Helpdesk - it was clear that few - if any of the agents were following up or even reading the feedback I continually sent. I was getting only two eror msgs: 81000306 and I think it was 80042727. Never resolved as yet with MSN Live, but - I did manage to get the Yahoo Msngr working for a short few weeks. Deciced on a full format of HDD, and I mean full - as in FDisk and also KILLDISK. Re-installed XP Home (SP2) from MS-DOS and still the same shit. Hmm... the MSN helpdesk say it's my ISP, but how come I am able to connect via Web Messenger and also goto very restricted sites (My Bank is an example) so the plot thickens...
