It's weird Ringer, if you can run a traceroute, then your tcp/ip stack is functional. Can you ping? Can you tell me the output of this command - "ipconfig". You need to run it from the command prompt.
Also see if you can ping anything on the net - try yahoo.com (ping yahoo.com).

if you try his modem on your machine then you will know if his modem is working properly.
if you can access the modem control panel (not all modems have one) through a web browser it might have a self test/diagnostic mode and then you can check it makes each level of connection.

Right guys it's the modem that appears to be faulty.
I tried mine on his comp and it worked like a good un.
I phoned NTL up and told them exactly what I done etc, and they asked me to ring back in a a couple of hours as there diagnostic systems where down and they need to run some tests
