Don't feel bad. Even the best of us get them. With all the game patches that i need to get and software updates there are bound to be a few that get by the recognition system of the scanners. How can you protect against the virus if you have no definition for it yet? The things was written this morning and by noon its been picked up. By then half the planet could have been infected. That is why i wont pay for virus scanning as this shows all scanning software as useless. What you really are paying for is for somebody to find the thing in the first place and give you the easy means to get rid of it.

I work for an Anti-Virus company, not all virus' need definitions to be written for them. Most Viruses are re-used code from old viruses and can be detected easily with a default definition or what we call Geno type dectection.

There is a huge difference between the features of paid AV and free AV, first thing being support when things go wrong! The second is that companies that do paid AV have the ability to patch their software 24/7 365, usually within minutes. Most AV companies share definitions and have virus traps/honeypots located across the planet, they can deal with major virus storms. I grant you that do some times conflict with legitmate programs to create false positive alerts but its easily resolved and better to be safe then sorry.

I read an interesting article the other day which tested 500 PC's with security software installed, only 3% were actually patched and setup correctly to deal with modern threats.

It does help to give windows itself updated as the vulnerabilities in an unpatched Xp system are staggering. If i run into something that i can't get rid of I wait till the fix is posted and do it manually. Still dont have to pay for it. I dont recommend this to everyone but in my case it works as i know what i am doing. The last trojan i got was in 2002. It took the community the better part of six months to find it so i am not that confidant in the system yet.

I use zonealarm for a firewall and antivir for my virus checking. They're all free and do a pretty good job i think

I'm not familiar with zone alarm, but as an experienced engineer I'd recommend 'avast' anti virus free edition, register and you'll get 18mths 100% free, it can even deal with the likes of root kits 'cloaked malware' something that most other free av programs are stumped with.

just my penny's worth Wink
