Just seen a nice new virus on the horizon, thought I should pre-warn those who are unaware of such things.
Have a look here

Hope it helps somewhat. I'm glad I use Pidgin.

just not being admin on the pc all the time would help loads. Being a limited user kills almost all crap on an uptodate machine. Not that anyone will listen to me

Restricting the user permissions to Limited doesnt stop all crap at all. Although you are right in thinking it stops alot of it Malicious items such as Malware can still be installed with or without admin perm's.

Im running Vista Home Premium using an admin account and since i upgraded to Vista ( march 07 ) I have had no problems what so ever with any malicious items. Im not even running a firewall ( although i have Virus and Malware scanners just incase ).

XP users shouldnt worry at all about there user permissions, as long as you have decent protection ( Firewall & Anti's essentially ) you should be fine, but dont go modifying permissions because there is no point what so ever.

Hmm I would disagree with this, I am limited in my knowledge of windows user rights but have heard they have got a lot better with XP and Vista compared to older versions. I would guess it does things like only allow ephemeral ports to be used for incoming connections etc. Therefore making intercepting traffic more difficult. It can stop a lot of crap if used in the same way as the user permissions on *nix boxes. Again, not an expert on windows permissions and no doubt they have been implemented badly

Ah well, at least you can rest safe in the knowledge that your machine is ever so slightly safer now that you have upgraded to vista but your hdd's will only last a couple of years due to the crappy indexing system that MS have for some reason decided to adopt with it....

Yeah, don't worry about user permissions, who cares who has access to all the files on your machine, I mean it's not like you could possibly store anything sensitive on a computer is it?

If your using a limited account your more likely to have people who are able to get at your files. In saying Dont worry about your permissions i was talking about if your already an Admin theres no point changing them.

Yes but running as a limited user at least anyone who gets access cannot then modify the more important system files. Hence making it more difficult to compromise your machine.
