I've read your post but whats the point of it you seem to be disagreeing with me be but the content of your post agrees with most of what I have said with one or two things added, that I agree with you on. My statement about connection ratios etc was a generalisaton.
point a.
There is far more to ADSL speed than quoted connection ratios and qouted download and upload speeds.
point b.
Im lucky to get the speed that I do as are many other people in Britain due to old wiring belonging to BT.
point c.
Check out what speed your actually capable of getting with a friend in the area you could pay for an 8meg connection for nothing.
29.11.2006, 21:08 quote
i agree with point c, i get a steady 7.4meg from my talktalk 8meg line, my mate (on BT) who lives just up the road from me (literally) gets around 4meg if he's lucky

There are currently no known capacity problems on your exchange. There may still be an exchange problem, however BT are not currently reporting that they are aware of it. Please contact Support if you are having speed problems, who can advise further.

Hmmm not very accurate, I think I'll trust the engineer who works on the line rather than the above.

Just some clarifications really - for example your comment on old wiring. I don't think our wires have been replaced for decades. Your problem with aluminium wires will be because the wire was either laid in a new estate or replaced at a time where aluminium was cheap and noone had though of dsl so it was fine for basic voice. So the problem is that your wires are new, but not new enough
The exchange checker on usertools simply records BT acknowledged status information about the paths between the exchange and BT central so if there is no recorded problems or bandwidth shortages then any problems are not due to BTs contention ratio. It is either ISP or as you have, last mile/CPE.
People on the same road, heck even houses next door can have bizarre cable routes to the exchange. One person may go straight there whilst the next may have an extra mile. BT laid them in whatever way was most convenient at the time.
Anyway, the reasoning behind my posting at first was that you seemed to imply that very few people would actually see any benefit from MaxDSL whereas I don't have direct access to the statistics, but I believe that MaxDSL does what it is designed to - provide everyone (barring faults..) with the best their line can achieve.
Then you said speed was all down to BT, so I gave my opinion on some other things that affect it which are the things people on particular ISPs always end up complaining about causing slowdowns.
Maybe the fault is in the explanations, I've worked in the DSL industry and spent years supporting end users so just attempted to clarify some points that didn't seem consistant with what I have learnt. Plus a bit of a discussion never harmed anyone

"Anyway, the reasoning behind my posting at first was that you seemed to imply that very few people would actually see any benefit from MaxDSL "
Sorry if I gave that impression I certainly didnt mean to, no can't wait but I have to till March next year at the very earliest!
"Then you said speed was all down to BT, so I gave my opinion on some other things that affect it which are the things people on particular ISPs always end up complaining about causing slowdowns".
Again I did not mean to imply that everything is down to BT just I hear a lot of people complaining about one ISP after another and you have to admit thats not always were the fault lies.
Again the whole thing isn't as simple as some people believe and its no good blindly pointing a finger and yep I'm sure if we did anything, between us I'm sure that point came over.
Discussion is good, without it we only have one persons opinion. If I only had that I'd still be wetting nappies.

Nah, cheese before bed apparently gives you nightmares..
Ian, to those couple of things - if you read back you will see that you actually stated so in pretty much the exact words, hence why I picked up on them! Maybe its not what you meant to say, but it is what you said so hopefully you can see why I got to where I was
Jelly babies.

The problem with text is that it can always be interpreted in different ways.
Of course I can follow what you said hence my explanation and apology.
But hopefully if you read back you can also see why I said what I did.
