Home >> Property and Real-Estate >> What's the cheapest area in England?

Where is the cheapest "nice" area in England?
Would it be somewhere near Bath, or rather Norwich...or maybe somewhere towards Dover....or further up north, such as Nottingham?
17.12.2006, 18:19 quote
It wouldn't shock me if Nottingham is pretty cheap.
It's a dump.
Can't actually think of any nice areas here.

maybe the north east, Durham, Darlington, Northumbeland too. some are very cheap but still nice areas, plenty of good scenery around.

I would imagine mostly up north, Hull, Newcastle, around the borders and some places in Wales to. Never looked into it really. Just an example though my parents sold a 4 bed house last year for 140K in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. The same house around here would have gone for about 350K. Crazy what difference 200 miles makes.

I live in Lancaster and it's pretty cheap up here, property wise. I bought my house about 15 months ago and it cost me £80k for a 3 (good size double) bedroom terrace and the town is pretty good with the lakes only 30 mins away and Manchester 45 mins away.

Again, I would probably say the North. East or West are both fairly cheap compared to, say, London, which is outrageous in comparison.

I think house prices will start to go down country wide so every where will be cheaper. We've already seen one interest rate hike and the city is forecasting anonther, maybe as much as 1% before may. You cant sustain high interest rates and high house prices. Im ok, all my mortgages are fixed for 5years at an average of 4.9%, already below the currant average rate of borrowing.
There ends todays lesson in how to save money.

I think they'll go down in the next year or two but not by a huge amount, maybe 10% max, just my prediction obviously, but then rental prices are generally sustained unless there is a dramatic decrease in house prices anyway. Thank god for the MPC, they will do a much better job of sustaining a good comprimise between house prices and interest rates than the government ever did imo.

Greetings, if you want a nice place to live with cheap rent / house prices and cheap cost of living but with good old fashioned Yorkshire hospitality try Calderdale in West Yorkshire, with the exception of Hebden Bridge you can still rent for under £100 per week for a 3 bed house, you can buy property in the countryside around here for way below the national average and the scenery is very beautiful as Calderdale nestles in the pennines. Also midway between Leeds and Manchester with motorway and rail access eitherway. I plan to move there soon as one of my friends did a few years ago and I love going to stay at his on a weekend!
Anyway thats my twopennorthworth!
see yer!
Johnny
