van gogh,
Vincent Willem van Gogh was born in Groot-Zundert, a village close to Breda in the Province of North Brabant in the southern Netherlands, the son of Anna Cornelia, nee, Carbentus and Theodorus van Gogh, a minister of the Dutch reformed church. He was given the same name as his grandfather—and a first brother stillborn exactly one year before. Now he was a guy who some may think was mad. Well perhaps he was, and he expressed this in his art. (or did he) He wasn't an imprssionist, but yes he did favour expression, and that of symbolism!
He only ever sold one painting in his lifetime, (The Red Vineyard). What about the colour yellow, its everywhere. There are some interesting theories about his use of yellow.

I found this piece of information to be more significant:
"Following his death, his fame grew slowly, helped by the devoted promotion of it by his widowed sister-in-law."
Arsenic was commonly used in the past as a method of slowly driving someone mad. Heavy metal (or mercury poisoning) was another common method of creating the illusion of madness in a person.
Both chemical poisons build up gradually and slowly in the body, and are not released by normal processes.
Does anyone know if his widowed sister in law happened to have a son?

I acknowledge omgitshim's response to my first proposition, but without me undertaking further research, for which I'm currently too busy to comply. I'm thus unable to accommodate his quiery at this time. I will when time allows answer his question.
However, I would welcome other respondents to add their contribution to the debate on van gogh, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem.

Van gogh did indeed slice his ear off. Well, not quite. Part of his ear lobe yes, and he did present it to a prostitute in Arles where they were living. He did this after an argument with Paul Gauguin the night before christmas eve 1888.
The eating of oil paint combined with drinking Absinthe, (the 19th century equivalant to 'crack cocaine') would have added to his unstable state of mind. It is said that van Gogh shows the bandage on his mutilated ear like a saint displaying the stigmata. Subjective I know. His head is turned to give us a better view. But this is a shameful self-portrait, raw with Van Gogh's horror and acceptance of what he had done. The act of self-mutilation has changed Van Gogh. He has become this walking emblem of what it is to live the life of art. Take a look at 'Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear' painted in 1889

Look up van gogh on wiki for more explanitory information.
I find the story of van gogh is really tragic to be honest.
I think he was named after his grandmother. He proposed marriage to his cousin who used to tutor him , but was bluntly refused, and the other relative told him he was discusting for his persistance, and that he wasnt well financially. After a while he started a relationship up with a prostitute and her father, and its possible they had a son. His father then pursuaded him to give up this relationship and abandon the family. Van gogh had a loyal brother named Theo.
The whole deal about the cutting off of the ear was because one of vincent's associates kept rowing with him and after one incident vincent stalked him with a razor blade but ended up cutting his own lower half of his ear off and handing it to a prositute "to keep it safely". Van gogh was then hospitalised for a few days.Theo was one of 3 who immediately visited gogh. Van gogh went home but returned to and fro the hospital till his house was taken off him by policemen after villagers had petitioned to have "the red headed man" removed .
In may 1889 van gogh was hospitalised into a mental hospital which was run by a man who had no qualifications. During his stay there, the clinic and its garden became his main subject. At this time some of his work was characterised by swirls, as in one of his best-known paintings, The Starry Night. In January 1890, his work was praised by Albert Aurier in the Mercure de France, and he was called a genius. He finally came out of the clinic and lived in a different area which was nearer to his brother.
However van gogh's depression got worse, and , eventually, which i find is the most saddest . He went into a field (one which i think he painted) and shot himself in the chest. He didnt realise he was fatally wounded and went back home. He died two days later with his brother at his bedside. According to theo van gogh's last words were "La tristesse durera toujours" which in french means " The sadness will last forever". Not long after (6 months i think) Theo, who coudn't come to terms with his brother's death , died from syphalis. Van gogh was 37. Suggestions to what plagued van gogh's mental state range from lead poisoning(which is what the paints were made from at that time), his absynthe or mental illnesses such as schitzophrenia or temperal lobe epilepsy.
I love the story, its so tragic.

Ever took acid?...
Take a good long look at most of his paintings...
Reminiscent of acid trip, or just madness...
Either way, he was not a genius...Picasso on the other hand was...He led the art world up the garden path...

I find Van Gogh is amazing actually. The energy that is shown in his swirls and curves depicts the emotinal state and anxiety he had to deal with. He did change things, we all know his is name for that.
His story is sad, especially seens as he was his most happiest in hospital, that's where brighter colours came into his paintings to show that. I however don't like Picasso's work much, it just doesn't do anything for me and I don't really feel emotions in them. But that's just my taste, as i'm not saying he wasn't great. but it just so happens Van Gogh is my favouite along with Edvard Munch.
