They're wild Dartmoor ponies and I spent a lot of time getting them used to me, I took loads of pics before that one. I gradually got closer and closer so the mare was comfortable with me being there. I used a long zoom somewhere around 300mm, aperture f/10 and shutter speed 1/50s, I was laying on the ground. I got lucky with the mare moving into the background and with the light althought it was a beautiful evening when I went out.

I don't often have enough patience for nature shots but that evening was perfect for it.
