Home >> Anything else >> Who's Your Hero?
04.04.2008, 19:06 quote
Just curious to know what people class as a hero? I know some people class sports personalities as heroes and this puzzles me as I just cant see how someone who gets paid millions for doing nothing is worshipped by so many.
I guess the media is responsible for this to a large degree especially as far as football players are concerned. Unfortunately it’s the little people who truly deserve it that get forgotten
The people I class as hero are the soldiers who landed on Normandy beach under a hail of bullets or the Firemen and cops who climbed the stairs of the World Trade Centre knowing full well they would never be coming down again.
who's your hero ?

hero for me would be ne1 who works with underprivaleged kids and social workers.they earn only a fraction of what they deserve and dont get proper recognition for their work.

i'd say people like the disaster teams etc, that ship off at a moments notice to devastation - most of them are volunteers.
In my eyes, a hero is a person who will do something for other people, without thought for themselves and except no special recognition for doing so.

Former collegue just retired I guess was the most admirable chap I know.
Jamaican, joined the army, took a british passport on independance, served in Aden and Germany, worked for BT then at my place. A very 'can do' kind of guy who takes life in his stride, always upbeat and friendly.

As a group, the RNLI. If one lives on the coast, you'll know what sort of conditions those people go out in.

I had the (unenviable?) job of helping to find them a job and a place to live when they came out of prison......as a job, it sucked, and I didnt do it long. Some people admired me for doing it, some despised me.
My hero is I suppose Mother Theresa and Martin Luther King, Donald Woods....people who have screwed their courage to the sticking post and stood to be counted.
Also like others have said, people who save others' lives risking (and sometimes losing) their own.
Also, all the unpaid carers - especially the children - out there that go about their business unknown.
