Dark Horse and Choochio - you raise some valid points, however, you yourselves are not going through a change like this one (are you??) and therefore dont know first hand what its like. |
I have no problem with the OP wanting the changes in her life.
My main point was that if someone wants something badly enough, they’ll put their hand in their pocket and pay for it, or get a loan, or whatever, instead of standing there with their hand out demanding their entitlement. This is *not* aimed at the OP, just a general view on the issue of 'entitlement' and the greedy handout culture that many in this country seem to have adopted.
And before anyone brings it up, with the exception of twice a couple of months ago, I pay full price for all my prescriptions. Not because I have to, because I (pun intended) put my money where my mouth is. Which is basically what hormone therapy is - a prescription. However, I am not entirely innocent of taking advantage of handouts myself, and I despise myself intensely every time I do. I try to live by my own morals when I can, but don't expect others to live by my morals and standards. If aimeegallagher feels she is entitled to hormone replacement, so be it. If she asks a question on a public forum that includes a statement like that, then every Tom, Dick & Harry in the world who reads it can express their view on the content of that post, like we all have so far. We (obviously) won’t all agree with each other’s views.
/* come to think of it, this is reminiscent of a thread sometime ago where someone asked what people thought of ‘him’ being trapped inside a woman’s body, and turned out to be a troll having a laugh at the expense of the replies */

I am trying to find where it says exactly what the law says, but I am pretty sure the wording regarding to NHS healthcare is "Entitled to", and mentions something about "treatment available to give a person a better quality of life".
Buggered if I can find it though.
I do understand what some have said about being lucky to have the nhs, but since we've got it we can have it.
I dont feel 'grateful' for it, because we have it which makes it my right to have it.
(of course there is a bit of me that *is* grateful, compared to other not-so-lucky countries, but the point being is that I live here, not there, so its a hypothetical comparison.)
I just dont get why someone would consider getting a loan to pay for something if they know for certain they should be able to get what they need for free. Bizarre. Anyone who pays for something they can get for free either has more money than sense or too much pride.
Oh dear, and i've gone off-topic too, but theres not really much more I can say in response to the OP til she posts again.
(btw, the 'troll' we had some time ago I think was merely raising an interesting point, made a joke of it to gain some insight from other posters, sadly this forum is not always terribly welcoming of 'alternative' lifestyle members.).

I think that the treatmnt should be available on the NHS for those that desperately need it.
But, I also don't think that it is quite right to whine about it if your doctor will not give you the treatment.
Bearing in mind what a serious matter it is, and how hard it is to be stuck in the wrong sexed body, it seems to me that paying for it should seem like a trivial matter.
It all comes down to how much you want (or need) the change.
If I want something bad enough, I don't care if I am entitled to get it for free, or if I have to pay for it.
That goes for sex changes, dental treatment, or the difference between catching a lift with a mate and catching a taxi.....

"But, I also don't think that it is quite right to whine about it if your doctor will not give you the treatment".
I don't agree because we are "entitled" (yes that's the correct wording I am sure) to a second opinion, when it comes to doctors making decisions about our health and healthcare.
21.07.2008, 12:52 quote
Yeah, second opinion, appeals and every avenue should be explored before deciding to pay for it yourself, as I imagine it must be rather expensive.
But if being in the wrong body is THAT bad, then money doesn't matter.

Money *always* matters when you dont have lots to spare, and need it!
I would imagine - from my clueless point of view - that it would be very hard to be pro-active and assertive in a situation like this?
Just thinking about my own medical situations in the past, it can be all too easy to feel overwhelmed and doctors arent the easiest people to disagree with at the best of times, I for one find them quite intimidating.

Rocketgirl, these are all good points. This is a very personal condition and trying to discuss this with a doctor, or anyone, must be very difficult. Especially when the condition has been eating away at the mental integrity of the person for a very long time. ie making them miserable, depressed, insecure or whatever.

I have no idea about what the OP is going through so I've not made a comment about it. I just wanted to highlight the fact that in this country we have the luxury to expect all kinds of treatments for nothing and we should appreciate this.
The most I can hope to say about the problems that the OP has is to try to remember this if they cannot afford to pay for their own treatment as it may go a little way to making the wait for treatment a little easier. Not much easier, but its something.
I think we all need reminding how lucky we are every once in a while.

I think that you look rather fetching in your outfit Moose.
Congratulations on your courage in overcoming your fears to post a picture of yourself like that.
Well done!
