jim is right genesreunited is a very useful site, ive had people contact me on there and many of them were connected in my family tree from australia, ireland and oxford to name a few places. it could save you alot of work by registering on that website as somebody might have done quite a bit of the work for you if you feature in their tree.

i think the best place to start is with your oldest living relatives, get as much info from them as you can because they are the ones with all the stories and the photographs.

I got back to 1745 on my dads side, i need to start work on my mums side, i did her mums line back to about 1840 but i need to work on her dads line, as i have heard they might be irish and that would be interesting.

good luck with it caz, it can reveal quite a few hidden secrets within the family though...

Would be very difficult to sort out my family tree. Have been trying for a good few years now.

I have found a member of family in German - except he doesn't speak any English, so it's difficult to try and find stuff out.

My father and his brothers and sisters went over to Latvia to trace our family, but could hardly find anything at all.

I have also been trying to find out more about Mum's family. I know that my Nanna was shipped around England throughout her life - Poor woman. Russian girl in a foreign country being shifted around. Confused Found some very grim stuff out there.

There is also a lot of conflict in my family, and nobody is willing to talk about my grandfather. Confused

it depends on what information you have to start you off & where your family were born and lived.
if scottish the records office at end of princess st in edinburgh is good place to start in scotland. you can look through electoral roll if you have addresses, birth records, death records, marriage certificates etc

there are also numerous websites, some you have to pay annual registration fee for plus a fee for each piece of information you access. There's one in particular that i found useful, i'll let you know when i can remember name of it

good luck & have fun

I've been looking at my family history on and off for last few years. Don't have much first hand info as parents and grandparents long gone. But even with little info it is possible. To be sure you are on right tracks you need to get birth, marriage and death certificates from Records office (£5 a time and possible to buy on web now). You need to cross check these. Also National Census is good to confirm and see ancestors sblings etc. (website www.census.pro.gov.uk). Useful wesites: www.freebmd.org.uk , www.ancestry.com (biggest source with free trial but then costs). Mormon Church wesite www.familysearch.org has vast database but sometimes haphazard!
I've got back to 1820 on mother's side - made easier because her family stayed in one area for a long time.
Hope this is useful and good luck!
