Home >> Anything else >> The 'my mum' thread....
03.06.2007, 21:19 quote
Just taking this off the other boards cos I don't want to interrupt the flow of things with updates all over the place!
My mum is 74 (ish) and apart from a few minor things that everyone gets she's never been ill. In fact our whole family ('touch wood') have enjoyed a fairly rude health always.
So it was a bit of a surprise when she got a minor case of 'the squits' a couple of months back, well she was treated, started to get better, went back home, then came down with this 'C. dif.' that they reckon she picked up when in hospital previously.
So she's been taken back into hospital on Friday, has responded well to treatment initially, reckon they're gonna keep her in for a few days, so we'll see, the signs are all good though.
Currently i'm going back and forward everyday to make sure my dad is okay. Which he is.
So for everyone else to have input on this thread (while I use it to update you all on 'Oldma.P' and her progress), have you got aged parents, grandparents, etc that are cause for concern due to thier age and frailty, or are they nearly 100 and still out dancing every night?

Ahhhhh Trev........my parents are quite sprightly still (in otherwords dad can still drink me under the table) but I can still see the signs of them getting older and it does worry me as to whats gonna happen. Im independant and all that but I still cant contemplate the thought when i wont be able to call on my mum and dad if needed and it quite honestly scares me ![]()

Awww hope your Mum feels better soon Trev..
Clostridium Difficile is an antibiotic associated colitis, which like the name states is caused initially from taking antibiotics..and ironically antibiotics are also used to treat it.
(just thought I'd mention what it was for those unsure)
My folks are still very active..both in their 50's and both still work full-time...They put me to shame a lot of the time, My Dad runs the London Marathon every year, and my Mum goes to the gym 2 or 3 times a week..not bad for soon to be Great Grandparents

My Mums 86 and she has aged a lot in the last 10 years. In her middle 70's she was a strong women, then she got angina so she had to slow down, then her eyesight started going because of diabetes. Now her memory is going and she is starting to get confused, although she is reasonably happy in herself.
I blame a lot of her recent problems on the care she got in the hospital and them letting her out too early. Doctors haven't been a lot of help either,
She's in a home with carers getting limited care, so it means I have to go to see her 3-4 times a week. My brothers and sisters don't, but that's a different story.

Yeah Jeg, I think I am seeing my mum starting to go the same way
And I have a brother, and he lives with his family over in High Wycombe, which is about 40 miles away, so doesn't get to visit often, which I couldn't possibly hold against him cos he supports the 'folks' financially where needed.
Anyways, i'm off over there again this afternoon so hopefully will have good news to report later on.

Good luck with that mate. I have brothers and sisters that live miles away, I also have a couple that live close, but I'm the only one that goes to see her regularly to do her shopping and feed her budgie etc, and make sure everything is okay. Maybe if I wasn't doing it one of my brothers probably would though.
But I'm glad she is living where she is because she has limited care 24 hours a day, and the care is increasing as she gets worse. Means less worry for me.

Well as most of you know my mum had a fall last october (shes 65) and was admitted to hospital, she's been disabled with rheumatoid arthritis since I was little and my dad has been her carer as well as him working full time, as well as working full-time and caring for my mum, his mum, (my gran) has been in a nursing home for the past 3 years and he visited her religiously everyday after work before coming home to my mum, anyway my gran passed away in July last year, just before my mum was taken in, my dad was really upset and its actually the first time i've ever seen my dad cry, but my dad being who he is, picked himself up, got back to work and started visiting my mum every day after work ...anyway my dad retired after working for Arnold Clark for 45 years an saw this as a great relief, and which meant my mum could be discharged from hopital as my dad would be there 24/7 to care for her...... on the weekend before she was due to be discharged my dad didnt feel to good, I thought at first he was just exhausted with everything and just let him sleep, by the monday morning when i phoned once the kids had gone to school, he didnt know where he was and was talking about going up to my grans house ...as you can imagine I drove down to his house (only 10 mins from me) and we called an ambulance ... He was rushed to hosp, and the outcome was a bran heamorrage... at this moment my dad is still really ill, and my mum is awaiting going into a nursing home, the home have said that my dad is more or less ready to go into a nursing home too now ??? The thing is too my dad has just retired with a huge pension and also a house worth almost 180,000 which is mortgage free ...which now is going to go to the social for nursing care. You really dont know the minute, this has been the worst year of my life. (apart from meeting Kev that is , who has been my rock)
Hope you get good news today when you go up to see your mum Trev
Sorry for the long post

me too!
I was spared the pain of watching either of my parents deteriorating too much, both were taken in their mid 70's, both fairly swiftly. To be honest I was pretty terrified at the thought of them becoming unable to look after themselves...

Thanks for the kind words everyone
I've just got home after spending most of the afternoon with my dad, i drove us to the hospital, mum was looking much better, has been eating properly, and they just got some test results through so they've started her on 'vancomycin' i think it's called.
We spoke to the 'Infection Nurse' (Derek...
) who was quite knowledgable and reassuring and just basically says she'll be in for a while longer yet, depending on how well she is doing.
So no bad news, all fairly positive really.
Stopped at Tesco on the way back and took my dad round to fill up his cupboards, got himself a new toaster, and my 10% discount!

Glad to hear that mate. The problem my mum had is they let her out of hospital too early with worse problems then she went in. Personally I don't think they care enough about the elderly in some hospitals. The last time she went in I had to have an argument with the consultant to make sure they kept her in until she improved.

I'm constantly arguing with the hospital rehab debt where my mum and dad are ...... theyre care and attention leaves a lot to be desired
and trev glad to hear your mums picking up a bit

You'll be pleased to know that mum is getting much better. She was moved to a special ward and has responded well to treatment, she is basically all okay now and wants to go home, but due to the nature of c.dif. they are going to keep her there until at least Monday just to be sure that she is ok.
She also instructed dad to put some new flooring down in the bathroom cos she didn't want to return home to 'that horrible brown carpet in there'....i think she's 'milking it' a bit now! lol.
