Really, our places like Tesco and Asda sell everything... if you don't have one i'm pretty sure you will soon.

Do they still clap when a film ends in the cinema on the Ilse of Man.

I remember when i was there I went and seen a few films and at the end everyone stood up and clapped. That was new for me.

Lol......er.....no.....they stopped that about 50 years ago

We won't get an Asda.....to much of closed ranks over here, you'd never believe how long it took to get Tesco!!!

And tony........you never know, lol. Hopefully someone will buy them all and keep them going....hopefully!

Would rather buy the same item for cheaper. Their own fault, tbh.

Woolies had been suffering from some time but the final straw probably was that insurers no longer felt able to insure their suppliers against the risk of their not being paid. This meant they had to pay cash for everything, which made things even worse.

Other high street shops are apparently in the same situation too.

Loosing the chain will probably be tough. People will loose jobs and the branches may commence clearance sales, troubling their competitors who otherwise wouldn't feel at all threatened by them.

This is the kind pain we should expect to be suffering at the moment. The money lost through those American sub-prime mortgages has dealt us a dolderous wound that may take some time to heal.

I remember what it was like 15-20 years ago and its for a while now it just hasn't felt the same. The only thing that hasn't changed is the name and that isn't good enough reason to keep going. In London your lucky if you get a smile out of the staff, the floors are always dirty and the shelves are never kept stocked.

With stores like Sainsbury's that sell pretty much every thing these days at competitive prices (for London anyway), that are clean, have friendly staff and are well run, if you don't keep up with the competition then you will fall.

Of course I do feel sorry for the people who will loose their jobs but what can anyone do about it?

It is sad, but the truth is that as handy as Woolies has been in some geographical areas, apart from putting a few electrical goods on the shelves (along with a few other token nods towards contemporary stocking), they never really moved with the times. A business can't survive on its reputation for providing pick n mix!

It is also a sad fact that almost everything else they sold could be bought elsewhere, and better quality, and more often than not cheaper. Granted, there are not always shopping alternatives such as Tesco, Asda, etc everywhere (especially at the outer reaches of the country, such as northern Scotland, Cornwall, and the islands), but on the whole the retail industry has moved on from when Woolies ruled the High Street. The only real reason for 'saving' Woolies would be for the jobs, there isn't really much to the brand anymore, other than it being a national institution.
