Who else thinks it sad that Woolies is in big trouble???
Its a High Street institution not just a shop
I know they were in trouble before the credit crunch but even so..........just not sure what (if anything) can be done to save it
What a terrible Xmas the staff will have.....purse strings tightened and the prospect of no job in the New Year
Thoughts please people

In business, if you don't keep up to speed, you go under.
That is the way of commerce, I am afraid.
27.11.2008, 21:47 quote
That may be so but it doesnt help the poor people who are gonna lose their jobs with not much hope of finding another
I feel really sorry for them....everyone is struggling at the moment well apart from the "fat cats" who in my opinion dont live in the real world anyway
27.11.2008, 21:50 quote
Didnt woollies start as a market stall around 1900?
Shame, a British Institution gone.
I too feel sorry for the employees.
27.11.2008, 21:51 quote
I've been out of work nearly 2 years next month, no one woried how I would manage when they laid me off at xmas...same goes for any company, the rich get richer & the poor get poorer, same as always

They sold the same crap that everyone else sells, but at High Street prices instead of pound shop prices; it was only a matter of time, and I’m surprised they didn’t close years ago.

I knew it was coming, i always go into the shop with hope but end up being disapointed.
and online shopping is crushing every shop these days, woolworths have an online function too.. but the prices just were'nt good enough to compete.
If they can join up with another high street company and remain, i hope they will as it will be odd without any woolies shops around, if not then it's bye bye time.

I love Woolies and i'll be sorry to see them go. It used to be great for toys when Ben was into all of that, and they sell cheap books which i like as well as the homestores section. Yesterday i bought some sheets from there and they are always good quality. And what about the pick and mix?????
We struggle on the island for shops and once Woolies go it will be even worse for us. Hopefully they may keep ours open as it's always very busy.

I personally think that since the likes of ASDA became popular placesn like Woolworths didn't have a chance... ASDA shops are srpinging up in all of the major areas, they have what you need and then some... tplus the prices are pretty good. Other shops just can't compete.
Tesco and ASDA, they are the main shops for all your needs these days, bar that of Argos. And even with Argos, I find that ASDA isn't far off it with it's electronics, home and entertainment sections.
27.11.2008, 22:22 quote
We don't have Asda or Argos
And our Tesco sells food, some cd's and dvd's, the odd electrical item and thats about it, no household stuff, no clothes, no toys and no pick and mix!!!

When a business goes under, it will not keep one shop open, silly.

Really, our places like Tesco and Asda sell everything... if you don't have one i'm pretty sure you will soon.
Do they still clap when a film ends in the cinema on the Ilse of Man.
I remember when i was there I went and seen a few films and at the end everyone stood up and clapped. That was new for me.
