Honesty. But I always first point out that much of my life was transient (until 10 years ago) and therefore included a lot of short term 'relationships'. I know it's a lame excuse, but it's true.
What I'm going to say next may sound really cheesy, but it is also true. It might sound like a pacifier after having been honest about the number of previous lovers, but it isn't. I can honestly say that every lover I have had has been better than the last one. And I have no problem in saying that with a straight face either. The last person I slept with is THE best lover that I have EVER had. Ever. In my life.

In addition to what I said, I should also say that if you can say tell your current lover that she/he is the best lover you have ever had and REALLY mean it, the number of previous lovers that you admit to is (hopefully) largely irrelevant. I want my current lover to know that she IS the most significant person in my life, and will say so. People are supposed to move on, so being with a lover who is 'worse' than the last one is taking a step backwards. I always see every new relationship as a step forward, both physically and mentally.
Here is the drawback to the original thread question - that question usually leads to comparisons to previous lovers. That is a strict no-no. First rule of every relationship should be "Never, ever, ask or answer the comparison question"
