I have a really strange fear of the sea at night!!! This is strange to me as I have neither a fear of the water or the dark. I sometimes have this strange "flashback" for want of a better term, that I get while awake of being up to my neck in water and surrounded by blackness. I can see light being reflected off the water (I have always assumed this is light from the moon) and I know I am treading water. Then this is the really scary part...I sense something nudge the bottom of my foot. I say this scares me because on more than one occasion my whole body has reacted to this "memory/flashback/daydream...whatever", luckily I have always been at home when this happened. It sounds silly I know but it feels so real and I have literally been terrified by this thing on several occasions.
I had it while I was lying in bed last night and I could feel my skin go cold through fear! What's happening to me???

Sounds bizarre.

It could be some mad form of panic attack, perhaps your brain just interprets it that way. I had one once on a night shift where I could have sworn I was being held down by something and shouted for my friend to come and help me. She was only a few feet away but never moved. When I took it up with her later she, and a few others, said I'd never made a sound.

Of course there's always the route of past-life experiences... depends how much you subscribe to that.

Oh I'm a big believer of the past life thing, I have been told it is possibly something to do with a past memory and I guess it would explain it (kind of). The thing is I can swim fine so it's nothing to do with a fear of drowning...and I would never swim in the sea at night anyway, I'm not stupid enough to do that...but it feels like it's real!

Similar has happened to me a few times when I've had a lay down and half dozed off. I wake up and I cant move, as if being held down by some kind of great pressure. I'm wide awake and I try to call out, but I'm paralysed. I did panic a bit, because I'm trying my hardest to move and get up, but I can't. Then when I lay there and stay calm it goes, and I can move...But I do have a bit of an headache afterwards.

Its odd the tricks the mind can play on you Surprised

Aww, I've swum in the sea at night...but then I also jumped off the pier one Boxing Day (The North Sea is a tad bit nippy that time of year!).

As you do believe in past life memories you could try getting help from a psychic, cost you though. Alternatively try a little meditation, nothing too Hokey just take a couple of minutes each day to put your mind at rest, maybe the whole thing will simmer down a bit.

Funny, I'm quite sceptical of things paranormal, dream interpretation, past life experiences etc, yet past life experience was the first thing that went through my head. I'm not a non-believer, I just like proof but as i believe I was around in the mid victorian days and possibly in medieval times (and no, nothing glamorous ) Im also pretty open-minded.

I'd go with Kateness' suggestion, or a past-life hypnotist. If you can be regressed to the point where this happened and can go through the scene whilst under, you'll learn where the 'fear' comes from and be able to deal with it appropriately.

do you know..my first thought when reading this was that there is something deep down which is troubling you, something at the back of your mind..something unresolved, but which you are unsure about tackling...
I know i am on the verge of sounding like you need dream interpretation, but really, i know that this can only be interpreted by the actual person themselves, not some gimmicky book which generalizes..they are a waste of time..
personally, i believe the only way to understand whats happening is to talk in great depth about it..with someone that listens, not gives advice..

What you described is actually more common than people believe..basically, we all have a set pattern for waking up..things are done in order..but sometimes whilst waking up, we skip a step..like you say, when you lay there and calm down, your body 'catches' up with itself and eventually all is fine..

Yep..I was working on my computer few years ago, half listening to the TV and I realised they could have been talking about this thing..it had a name, but I never caught it. It was only a short item, and I weren't taking a lot of notice. So you may be right.

Maybe in a previous life you were a passenger on the Titanic?

Sleep paralysis i think its called. My best friend used to get awful bouts of it, he'd be lying aware for as long as 20 minutes sometimes, unable to move a muscle. Not the nicest experience.

That or a sailor on a battleship. The thing that you feel against your foot could have been a shark or debris or something.

Seems exactly what has happened to me, not for a while though. But it is a weird sensation, even for quite a while after it ends. The only way I can explain it is, for a while afterwards, all my body feels tight and I have a slight headache.
