Why we should sterilise teenage girls ... temporarily at least
By FAY WELDON

Last week, an intriguing proposition was mooted by Government minister Dawn Primarolo. Teenage girls, she said, could be steered towards what is described as "long-term contraception". This is now possible thanks to the development of contraceptive jabs and implants which can last up to five years. In other words, there is a way of effectively sterilising girls for a lengthy period of time.

Hate to say it but as the mother of a 12 year old girl I would say yes. She brings home some horrror stories. We had a birthday party for one of her friend recently and as they were chatting away one said "is your boyfriend good at kissing" and the other replied "yeah but he's crap in bed". I nearly died. They need to have a chance.

How about some sort of contraceptive pill for men?

But if you give underage kids the 'permission' (of sorts) that gives, you also have to start thinking about diseases and stuff too....

I seem to remember seeing on some sort of news show that there is now a contraceptive jab available for men?

My daughter is 10 years old, and I have the best contraceptive that money can buy, a baseball bat, and I'll burn it when she's 16 years old.

Yeah I know that would be like shutting the gate after the horse has bolted.
But it is hard to take any preventative measures without it looking like you are in some way condoning the whole issue of underage sex.

THis is the problem I have just now. Do I put my daughter on the pill cause she's 12 or hope she doesn't get pregnant with no bloody warning. Given that most teenage pregnancies seem to be from one night stands.

Doesn't that just kind of encourage them?

I say they shouldn't be 'temporarily steralised' or whatever.

If they are old enough to have sex, and think they are responsible, then surely they are 'responsible' enough to raise a kid, eh?

My local area is flooded with these so called 'responsible' girls, we call them teenage-mothers.
Like you say, it does condone what they are doing, or at least that is what their excuse will be when they get pregnant.
