religion is each to their own, personally i think that anyone that believes in god is kinda naive, but that's MY OPINION.. however when you look at it like this...

if you go to the doctors and tell them you talk to someone invisible.. what happens... your thrown in the looney bin or given medication..

however

if you go to a church, there's people in there, all talking to the same invisible person, that Never show's himself, that Never does anything god like and, the one that really pisses me off, NEVER saves the people that need saving.

JUST MY OPINION !

if this causes a riot, i'm erm.. blaming meg'z and running away...

I hadnt noticed moose refer to himself as a Fascist. Is it illegal to be?
The immigration situation IS in a mess, so I didnt see a problem with moose saying so.
And it *is* off topic, fascism isnt a religion to my knowledge.
Just out of curiosity, how come you didnt pick up on Meg The Mod's humorous comment about the French?

That was just a joke, maybe in poor taste yeah, but I think everyone safely knows that the French DID actually put up a fight during WWII.

Back on topic (phew)......

I don't believe in God myself, but I hate to think of a world without religion, it has a real purpose.
It has to be one of the oddest things you'll ever come across, you can't see it, you can't prove it right or wrong, but yet so many people believe in it.

I know, thats why I was simply trying to say this should be a free speech forum, and people shouldn't try to cherry pick what is 'allowed' to be said..........humorously or not.

trust me, i really would love to just go off on one, but it would be unfair to do so as already mentioned, there is no solid evidence to the existance or non-existance of ' the big fella' so i shall just stick with an i don't believe and leave it at that me thinks..

however, if this topic was pointed at jahovas witnesses... you would have to ban me - for my views would definately offend.. Confused

Or perhaps Rioja identified Moose`s bizarre pro-Hitler rantings as being ever so slighty more worthy of challenge than a silly little joke about the French. Just a thought.

I know all about `free-speech` Alice. I`ve read from Plato to John Stuart Mill. I can also tell when a well-meaning but misguided person has become little more than a de facto apologist for a bigot.

I take it then that JW arent your bag? Could you not just simply say that you dont agree with them, *in a polite fashion*? Simply letting rip in an abusive manner at someone else's faith just because you dont agree with them *would be* offensive and un-necessary, you are right there.........

I'll take that oppurtunity to rant.

Hear me out.

Here's a theory....
Religion is old. While it's symbolic precepts are widely distributed, such as the Egyptian sun god Ra's red sun being the basis for the halo in many religions as well as countless festivals having paganistic roots, the basic logic behind most religions is to provide a path, ruleset or guideline for people to live their lives.

In days long past, when man roamed much in the fashion of animals - in packs and tribes - rules were simple. Then came the burgeoning increase of our numbers. Might was right - powerful ones ruled over weak ones. Many religious scriptures tell tales of the opressed led into the light by religion in the guise of a prophet or a saviour.

Those who followed the path prospered and those who didnt were punished.

Isnt that much like laws?

Here's the crux of the theory - religion was the nascent ideal of a law abiding society. It was made to elevate humans beyond being barbaric and lowly towards civilisation as more and more of us populated this planet. With larger organisations, you need a much more stricter and well laid set of guidelines to follow - or else the organisations falls into disrepair and chaos.

So Religion was the basis of all laws and God, in his multitude of appearances, was the ultimate judge - unbiased and without influence.

Now, with humanity having reached a height that is at times dizzying, we have formed our own laws. laws of the land based on right and justice (admitting though that they do not always work, hence religion still stands)
Most folk just find religion to be outdated and useless and therefore dont find the need for god.

Furthermore, they tend to advocate the joys of being "godless". a paradox indeed - making a religion about being non-religious.

Many say religion tells you to be good - who tells you to be good? religion or your upbringing by your parents, who learnt from their parents and them from theirs - an idea of common courtesy.

Slowly we see that humanity, growing into an unmanagable size, divides into smaller subsections that desperately need to find direction and purpose. And so we eventually fall back on the teachings of our elders to live our lives.

Evolving slowly into a more spiritual, holistic view of life.

Apologies if anyone felt offended, like i said, it's just a theory.

Edit: minor grammatical changes to make it more readable.

Thanks, religion's a really serious topic for some - so it deserves serious thought.
