I was told by a friend who works in IT that one of his fellow employees actually finished a spoken sentence with the word 'lol'..surely a stoning in public would be less than fitting for this. anyone for newspeak??????? bastardisation of the english language is upon us.

Americanisation rather then bastardisation is the problem..color instead of colour, people saying Zee and not Zed, realize and not realise. But then the English language always has been evolving.

To be honest mate, its not the first time I've seen a post like that..I have seen posts like yours ruin message boards because people become dubious about posting.

I can see your point on americanisation & I have read a few articles on the way language is evolving, but I don't think a post like mine is going to ruin this board or make anyone dubious about posting..i really can't see that happening, they don't seem to take themselves too seriously & have a laugh anyway, my point is the overuse of internet/text slang..I don't mind lol at all I use it myself, mrravens comments summed it up, it has to be used to highlight jest or when joking..its when its slotted in every given chance that it becomes irritating, I've seen some god awful posts (on other forums) with lol or similiar almost used as full stops. The post became meaningless.

Personally I rarely use lol, but I have to use emotions quite a lot because some of the more sensitive people on here seem to take some of my posts the wrong way Confused

Some posts and internet slang wind me up a bit, but I bite my lip...but I'm nearly 50 Surprised Some of the younger people have been brought up with it.

I don't care when people do it online.
