Well personally I think a little bit of a public show would work no ends in humiliating him and putting everyone straight. Walk up to him with people around. Kick him square in the nuts and say very loudly that next time he talks shit about you he'll be chewing his nuts for breakfast. Then walk away before he recovers enough to say anything..
