here is a map:
The one in Winfrith was switched off in 1990 - however it will last until 2090 until it has been completed de-acivated.

I cycled out to Torness from Edinbiurgh. I found a fugure of Mr Fantastic, the rubbery limbed guy from the Fantastic Four on the Beach; which was dumped concrete with huge cubes of rock scattered on top that had, presumably been hewn during the construction of the plant. It had become partially natural looking with deposits of shells and vegetation.
There was a guy fishing from gantry above the outflow from the Station; he said he went down there to get away from the wife, and that there was lots of fish you wouldn't normally find, as the waters were warmer! Really odd place there were these little concrete grandstands around the plant with old weather worn public information boards with cheery graphics on, 'obviously' to engage the curious/concerned back in the day - about the wonders to nuclear energy.
There was also a group of travels in a park right beside the complex, and they said it was the only place they were allowed to stay!

Really odd, that you can find more information about British nuclear plants on the German Wikipedia pages then on the English pages?
On the page about
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dounreay nothing is mentioned about 1995 only on the German version:

I think the biggest danger is not that an airplane or terrorist attack could kill millions of people - it is the growing radiation...once while every nuclear plant leaks radioactive gases, water is radiated - even if in small portions - and you always need to find a place to store all the radiactive rubbish - not for some months or years - for hundres of thousands of years - and most "holes" are already full...and an earthquake, accident or whatever could also lead to radioactive material leaking into the ground(water).
The closer you are to a nuclear plant the higher the chance you get cancer - and statistics also show that the cancer rate is higher in areas next to nuclear plants.
I also think nuclear plants are old-fashioned and hard-to-control - if something happens there is nothing you can do apart from standing around and looking stupid. Also there is no need for nuclear plants - of course it is not easy to just replace them but there is biggest challenges then that. After all we are talking about 20% of all electricity that is deliverd though nuclear plants.
The UK has lots of shores - so enough electricity through tidal power plant or offshore windparks. Then, there is also solar energy and "saving" energy through intelligent devices and improvements of workflows etc....
31.03.2011, 18:06 quote
What about this idea...
If you want electricity, you have to make it yourself!
You can choose any method, except nuclear.
People could have solar, wind-power, or diesel/petrol generators, or (if they lived next to a river, for example) mill-type generators.
That would ensure the users appreciated the cost of it!
And might be more careful about wastage.
Alternative uses of the existing power distribution network could be investigated eg a slow/cheap/scenic people carrier system.
I think that 25% could be saved now, by banning any lighting that wasn't needed for health and safety purposes. Every shop window in the land shall be dark when the premises are closed, when offices are empty the lights should go out - these and more shall I decree!
Any individual who uses one watt more than is absolutely necessary, must generate that watt - and five more - by bicycle or treadmill!
(I shall turn everyone into a gerbil!)
Those extra watts will be pumped into the schools and hospitals!
It shall be known as The Watts Up Doc Scheme!
Oh, and I think it's damned unsporting of those Germans to wash the English dirty linen in public!
And they trying to keep it quiet and not frighten the sheep! ![]()

I visited a nuclear plant in Wales years ago. I can't remember if it was de-commissioned or not. It reminded me of a scene from the Bond films and we had to be scanned going in and out, I made the equipment bleep but after some initial hesitation they waved me through...prob too many X-rays haha!!

A bit strange that even the BBC does not cover this topic in more details. All you find is articles like that:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-12799322
...just repeating what other people said - without any in depth analysis or background information.
To this article I would ask:
- can nuclear power be safe? how do you define safety? There is no 100% safety
"Nuclear is not a single solution [to the UK's energy needs], but there is no solution without nuclear," he concluded.
Why does the BBC just quote this? What's the point?
The make opinions appear as facts...
03.04.2011, 19:45 quote
To be fair they do usually have links to accompanying artilces; well past ones in this case - and it's not a British Government view.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-12769810
That's why the ex-broadsheets do have an advantage over web news in terms of layouts allow for overveiw spreads on subjects, rather than furtively clicking about on the page for a broader picture, if it's there.

About the article: it is all about votes and how many members they get into parliament on the next elections...usually everything changes into the opposite direction every 4 years - so no political decisions are forever - only until the next 4 years.
The green party tries to stop nuclear plants for 40 years now in Germany - as they got more votes due to local issues in Stuttgart, they now use the current situation in Japan in order to get the nuclear plants switched off.
In general, I am also in favour for switching them off, but also for other reasons:
- it is also good for the economy to invest in research&development for alternative energy
- not many companies offer technology for alternative energy - so there is a big potential
- nuclear energy is making few company lots of money and costing the government/tax payer lots of money
- nuclear energy is old -fashioned - if you want to generate "nuclear energy" - money should be invested in nuclear fusion not fission which results in even more energy, no radiation, no radioactive waste and less risk. Nuclear fusion plants would be possible - but no government wants to invest into this technology.

They have been investing, for the past 30 odd years.
Millions and millions of any European monetary unit you can mention.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joint_European_Torus
And it's been occupying the best European brains for that time too: the staff being seconded from universities all over.
But - for all the time, money and brain-power - they haven't got working or workable fusion!
They're thinking of building a bigger one:
http://www.jet.efda.org/jet-iter/
It's an amazing place though. I bought all the computer equipment being replaced there, at one time, and got a conducted tour (with my son). It pulled so much power, they had to tell the local power-station when they were going to 'fire it up'!
And it may not be as safe or as 'green' as you imagine.

Millions yes, but not billions
There is many unemployed physicists or hanging around at universities with a part time job - so I am sure it is not that bad.
In the UK are currently 19 (soon 20/21) nuclear plants.
Every plant lasts around 40 years and then it takes 100 years to knock it down, split it in small pieces, out them in yellow tons and burry them somewhere. It costs around 100 billion pounds to demolish a nuclear plant when it reaches its lifetime.
So if 2000 billion pounds can be spent on this, I am sure a couple of billion pounds to investigate new technologies without producing tons of radioactivate waste would be not that bad...
I am still supporting investing money in solar/wind/water energy as well as tidal plants...you dont need so much money and results are visible a lot quicker.

I live really close to Bradwell, and frequently pass it on some of my walks. It's been de-commissioned, but it's possible that another will be built further along from it.
I read a report a little while ago about a mineral that is considered a waste product in mines from all over the world that is cheap, could be used to make a cleaner burning nuclear fuel, as well as being more efficient. I believe that more research was needed to get it working, but there was no real reason why it wouldn't work.
As for there not being much invested in Nuclear Fusion, I heard that a 50 Billion euro fund was set aside for research and building a plant about a year and a half ago in a news report. I hope that it happens, Fusion will be the future., if they get it working
