From what you said before, he could only have been clearer if he'd prefixed every message with "Hi I'm a scammer"

So proceed with extreme caution.

Only thing I can say is go with your first impressions, i find that they are seldom wrong...

It's better to walk away unscathed than revisiting a situation and possibly finding you're back where you've started and berating yourself for it later.

It's your call in the end but keep your eyes wide open Very Happy

It is a bit hard to tell for any of us to judge really, the only thing that I can say is the obvious.

1) Don't hand over any money.
2) Don't give out any personal details (ie. phone number, address etc)
3) Be very wary!

I think those three things should apply to most people you speak to over the net, at least until you get to know them really well.

You probably know then signs of a scammer yourself, so just sit back and wait for him to make it obvious.

You never know though, it could well be a misunderstanding, but take care eh?

Very Happy

I have some very good advice (for all people who think it's OK to report a scammer in public). But it is contrary to what others have said so far.

1) Naivety is a 2 edged sword.

2) Just because someone ‘asks you for money’ (as you said in one or two posts) doesn’t mean they’re a scammer. If you made a mistake, it might come back and bite you on the arse.

3) Just because there is a forum to report ‘scammers’ doesn’t mean you have to - especially posting their user name, as you did. There is a site administrator who can deal with this sort of thing if there is any doubt.

Take the advice or leave it.

She was pretty much told to put the name up.

True but as it was suggested by a mod as being helpful for the site and the admin I can certainly understand why she did.

Although I think it would be better to have such reports only sent to toby/god.

Sorry, but I still think that unless one is 100% certain that another member is a scammer (100% meaning without any doubt whatsoever – being ‘really confused’ indicates not being 100% certain), no user names should be posted in public. Purely a personal opinion, of course.

On the subject of ‘being told to do something’, and this is most definitely NOT a gripe about the mods (who I think do an excellent job!!), I do think that new users to the forum should be made aware that forum mods are not Flirtbox staff responsible for the day to day administrative running of the main site. In theory, any advice or suggestions given by forum mods to other forum users about the main site is given ‘user to user’, even when adopting an 'official line'

(In fact I feel that strongly about this that it is one of the handful of reasons I gave up my own moderator status - many new members who were using the forum assumed that because I was a forum moderator I was a ‘Flirtbox official’, and I was bombarded with questions about the main site - e.g. scammers, to name but one)

Didn't I already agree with that?

She wasn't really confused at the time she put it up though. As she is now unsure it would be an idea to remove it, assuming editing posts is available in that forum.

Dowen, t'is been said already. Not necessarily a scammer in the sense most here think, but if someone you've never met suddenly asks you for money, Back Off Fast.
A friend of mine's brother was online with a lady in the us - they even spoke on the phone and webcam for about 6 months, she sent him all sorts - teddybears, flowers etc. (which i thought odd for a woman to do, but there you go) so they had each others home addresses...she suddenly asked him for £500 for an urgent operation - when he couldnt stump up she dumped him. He was madly in love, spoke on the phone every day for about 6 months etc.
Be careful when money is mentioned!

I had a few a while back, start off chitchat nice, then its "Can you find me a job/college in the uk"..I never let it get to the "I need money to do this" stage.
You will learn to trust your own instincts, I hope.

Evil or Very Mad Damn boy... If they don't have your address, how can they come to your house to look at the list on the fridge with all their flaws you can't possibly overlook so they'd know better for their future relationships?

Also... If they can't come to your house... Where are you supposed to show them your axe? At the market? Twisted Evil

And since i was the mod to say put the nameup, I will stand by it. God himself has asked that potential scammers are reported in that forum if people so wish in the past which I'm sure you will all find if you look hard enough.

I was gonna lock this but I actually think there is some pretty damn good advice here about spotting scammers/fakes soim going to leave it.
