Surely the very act of consciously programming your mind is the ability to control it?!
I had been 'programmed' in my 2nd marriage to react certain ways to save myself a tongue lashing. When that relationship ended, I then had to 'un' programme myself. It was a conscious effort on my part even tho' my reactions to certain situations had become 2nd nature to me, otherwise some poor sod would have been on tenterhooks with me jumping out of fear at certain moments.
Thankfully for me, the next poor sod that did come along was very patient
