I got up at six am this morning, after being awake for the best part of the night with pain. Got the kids and myself ready, dropped them to my mother's and was in work for 08.45.
I met the boss himself about 09.15. We had the general chat....
He told me about the hours, who I'd be working for, what I'd be doing..blah blah blah... then he asked if I smoked, to which I replied that I did. Nothing more was said.
At lunch time I went to meet my Shell for something to eat and afterwards, naturally had a ciggie. I was the opposite end of town. Nowhere near the office.
About fifteen minutes after I got back I was called into the office to talk to Martin.
The conversation went something like this....

"You had lunch?"
"I did, yeah."
"You were smoking?"
"Eh......yeah..."
"I can't have people here who smoke."
"Pardon?"
"We are promoting health here, and I can't have people here who smoke. I'm going to have to let you go."
Surprised

Now...wtf.....lol. Aside from the fact it's the quickest I EVER lost a job... the reason was f**ked up! Can you fire someone for being a smoker? Confused

That is taking the piss..absolutely unbelievable, I would definitely look into that if I was you. That's why I hate working for other people nowadays.

its nothing to do with them what you do in your lunch hour away from the premises, sounds like he just cant stand smokers and im sure that would come under some sort of discrimination law, especially since you told him you smoke before you started.

Well I did ring the Citizen's information line, as I was almost SURE it came in under the equality act of legislation. It doesn't though. They did, however, advise me to see a solicitor. And I will. That was well out of order. Mad
