Home >> Anything else >> New car tax rates for 2009
10.07.2008, 16:55 quote
As a single person in this country, we are all helpless to stop such a thing from happening.
What should happen is that everyone should refuse to tax their car when this new law comes into effect.
Sure for the first few days cars will be towed.
When all of the compounds are full (I would give it a day), they will finally listen.
They cannot take EVERY car user in the UK to court, it would be impossible.
Now, coming back to reality, we are all going to lie down and take it like good little bitches........

Exactly. People in this country don't have the bollocks to do such a thing. We've become a nation of beaten down cowards.

Well people did do it to get rid of the poll tax and a while back to force down petrol prices briefly.
But many people won't be affected by this, (like mega atm) and some are getting their tax for nothing or 20 quid and would have been over 100 not long ago for everyone.
It's just another thing to factor in when getting a new car.
Plus the reason only the rich will be able to drive won't be down to the government but the oil companies making the most of their product while they can. So might be worth looking for an alternative fuel vehicle mega, if there's somewhere to get the fuel.
Didn't Top Gear run a car on vegetable oil a while back?

It seems really strange as I have a Renault Clio 1.5 dci which will be only £20 a years yet the one below:
E 131-140 £110 £115 £115 Renault Clio 1.2 Quickshift (petrol) -
is £110, it's weird how they work out these emissions

Could be cos it's diesel Freda....better for the environment and all that
Claudia, it's on your vehicle registration document if registered before or after 2001

Ignore the band it says though and just look at the emissions and compare with the new table LV posted. It still has the old bands, not the much larger range of them under the new system.

Flip i prob shoulda watched the news today, im sure there will be some sort of meeting about it in work 2moro! An yes i am one of said b*stards that take all this money of u! We gotta pay too tho! Cant remember who said they didnt know where 2 find their emission figure but if your car is registered after 1st march 2001, it will be on ur v5c just below the cylinder capacity! The biggest of the rates only applies to vehicles registered on or after June 2006 (not sure of exact date). Work will be sooo much fun now that has been released, may just head to the pub!!
10.07.2008, 20:04 quote
It's interesting, as it's not really going to persuede anyone like me to buy a new car - both mine (a large car and a smaller one) are pre-2001 vehicles, and so don't pay much tax. However, the larger of the two is much older and emits masses of CO.
If I wanted a modern equivalent, I'd have to pay over a hundred pounds more a year in tax under the new scheme, despite a more modern car being safer, more economical, cleaner, and helping the automotive manufacturing industry which the government is also talking about giving tax breaks to....
Something doesn't add up here (o;
10.07.2008, 20:49 quote
Just a quick bit of logical thinking if you reckon you will sell your current car and buy a car in a cheaper tax bracket....
Anyone who owns a car which will cost more to tax under the new ligislation will now find that their car is worth a LOT less than before.
Likewise, every car which will be in the cheaper tax bracket is now worth a great deal MORE than before.
So, the chances are that you will be better off keeping your current car than trading over to a lower emission model.
So, there you have it.....
Do/will the new tax rules lower emissions?...No
Will the new laws take into account the people who cannot afford to pay more?...Yeah right!
Will we lie down and take it like good little bitches?..............
(Yes, he's back, for a one time only appearance)
10.07.2008, 21:10 quote
Ok I *AM* a bit thick ok? I admit it here and now.....Is this "vehicle exise duty" the little round road tax disc in the windscreen that we pay once a year? If thats the case, heck my car which I was told was 'pretty good' on the environment is in the penultimate *worst* band F. Ooops. Oh look Sod the envirnment, think I will go get me a Skoda Just Because its the cheapest excise duty band...
10.07.2008, 21:13 quote
You're not thick... but yes, it is the tax disc. Then again, is an extra few quid on the disc going to make any real difference, given it now costs an extra 30% to fill up on a year ago....?
