Came home from a bike tour of the corn fields today to be greeted by a dove on my top doorstep from the house. I opened the door, placed the bike in the hallway, and the dove? It stood there and watched me. I filled a small tea cup of tap water to the brim, and placed some sun flower seeds on the step. [With the water].
I noticed, 15 min later the dove hadn't moved. He\she was dozing and wobbeling in a drowsy manner and a pool of bird diharrea on the step.
So now I have a white dove as a house guest sleeping on newspaper in the kitchen. Until it's health returns. I couldn't leave it outside because of the cats. There are no markings that I can see of, so pressume it is a wild dove, if it can't find a higher perch for it's saftey against predetors then I will help.

I wish everyone was as thoughtful as you TW. Hope your dove makes a full recovery. I used to feed birds in this condition with honey dissolved in luke warm water. Dunno whether its a great idea but my thinking was that if they aren't eating then they will gradually have less and less energy to recover. Plus its supposed to be antiseptic

Keep us posted TW, well done that man. Isnt it funny how when an animal is ill it knows who to go to for help?
28.07.2008, 02:06 quote
All fingers and toes crossed for the dove's speedy recovery. Is there an animal welfare society akin to the RSPCA in Belgium? They might be able to find out what's wrong.
Reminds me of when I was a kid - I lived on the south coast. We found a seagull in the cellar and we knew it wasn't well because my dad picked it up and it didn't even really try to bite him. We put it in a box with a blanket and some food, but it wouldn't eat. The RSPCA officer came out and they took it to get checked out. Poor thing had lead poisoning and had to be put down
I hope this little guy has a better future.

My guest, this morning was laying on it's back in a pool of it's own mess. On closer inspection was still alive. I moved him, cleaned the floor, I held it in my hands as it was gasping deeply for breath. It had drunken in the night, but chose to sprinkle him\her with tap water to refresh itself. With a damp cloth I gently cleaned the back feathers of any mess; And whilst doing so cleaned the back end to help prevent any infections. This action came as a shock to my guest as the eyes, for the first time were open widely. I turned to lay him down in a nest of cloth, within three steps to the nest of cloth that laid prepared, it died.
'Just in Case' my diagnosis was wrong, I left it to rest in the cloth as I continued to prepare my self for work. Thinking as I did, that was quite lucky because it is rubbish day today and needed to tie the last binbag to set outside for the collection. Rigamortis had set in it's beak with in that small 20 mins so ceremoniously laid this dove to rest on top of the honeymango and onion peelings and tied the binbag shut.
I have spent the last few hours thinking if I had in fact done the right thing considering the terrential downpour last night. Wondering if this wild dove bieng held in captivity in its last hours would of in fact preffered to of been gasping it's last breath in the open and free air.
I have also been wondering if in fact this dove will go down in history as the only dove to die in shock of having its anus rubbed with a damp cloth.

Aw...your all so soft! LOL...
At first i thought TW was telling a joke! LOL...durgh!
I used to have a Kakariki Parrot called Norman after Norman Bates, cos he was a psycho! He used to wait till the phone rang, and when you answered it he would screech as loud and as long as he could. Once you put the phone down, the blasted thing wouldnt make a peep!
I also had a budgie called Dave. I just liked the name Dave....
If i get any more pets (I have 2 cats, one called Sticky Bud and one called Loki), here is a choice of names i would use:-
Bartleby
Trevor
Archemedes
Doris
Bruce

Do you give it blowbacks?
28.07.2008, 09:09 quote
Aw TW - thats so sad :0(
But birds are very fragile little things, and it is so hard to treat them because they cant tell you or show you whats wrong like maybe other animals can.
I for one think you did the right thing, you didnt know it was going to die and so you took it in to try and save it.
RIP little dove! :0(

No!!!
It wasnt meant like that when i named him. He earned his name because when you picked him up as a kitten he would cling to your clothes and not let go, like sticky buds in a field!

My hamster is called Loki after the mischievous Norse God because he was always escaping when he was young. Now he just sits on his fat arse and eats.
28.07.2008, 11:06 quote
