I spent too much dosh on these Teach Yourself dvds for Zulu and Amharic, to refresh myself, also Latin, but they were crap - who wants to learn how to say "Do you take credit cards?" or "I've lost my mobile phone" - especially in Latin - I mean, where and when would you need to say you'd lost your mobile phone and want to pay by credit card in Latin??? They've made it up anyways......and alot of the amharic was wrong.....
The daily telegraph have an excellent book to teach/progress yourself Latin, I just cant be arsed to read it.......

Stu -when you've gotten into Spanish a bit - get yourself a spanish speaking email penpal. There are quite a few on here. Best way to learn the real lingo, not that rubbish about which is my hotel, wheres the toilets etc.

My lad is teaching himself Polish (with the help of a neighbor) so he's got someone to talk to when he leaves school and gets a job. Its a very interesting language.

I am currently (ahem, when i can be arsed) teaching myself written Ancient Greek.

Is it multi-sensory? So you can hear the pronunciation?

I know its a bit baby-fied, but I find it easier when its got say a photo of 3 apples and someone saying the number 3.........I learn faster that way!

I speak Latvian, and I can speak a little bit of(very limited) Russian, although I can understand SOME Russian when it's spoken. I can't read or write in Russian.

I'm thinking about learning Russian properly. Not sure yet.

I’m lucky, I guess I have a knack for languages. I can speak a couple of Germanic languages fluently (as in I am confident enough to start a conversation about any subject, and use colloquialism/slang, although my grammar is sometimes lacking, but despite this, have been known to banter on the German forums here) and understand others (even Yiddish). I found that a working knowledge of German also helps with basic reading and comprehension of Scandinavian languages. I also have a basic understanding of French, and can understand a lot of Spanish/Italian (and have a broad vocabulary in these, especially French).

As far as the usefulness of Latin (mentioned above), although it may not have much practical use in general daily life, it does offer an insight into other languages, thereby making it a valuable tool if one intends to pursue, say, Italian or Spanish.

Even though many people believe that English is not my first language, it was the first language I ever learnt.

I learnt my own mothertounge Hindi later at age 5-6. My parents speak Urdu so I picked it up as well.

Also, living in Japan led me to learn japanese - although my reading and writing are crap compared to my ability to speak and understand it.

Other than that everywhere I've gone I've picked up on languages.
Currently learning Polish.

A bit like Shiraz, my first language that I communicated in was Swahili. Now I probably only know a handful of phrases but can follow some written down.
Dont know if I am like DH with a propensity for languages, but as we travelled all over africa as a child I did learn to communicate effectively with the local kids so learnt several African languages.
Yes the Latin helps with a multitude of other languages, so does Greek, including English.
But, nowadays the only people I converse with are English speaking so I doubt I have kept up any fluency in any other language these days.

I am not fluent by any means..but can get by with a little French and some German..Does British sign language count? I did stage 1..2 and 3 in BSL and am used as an interpreter at the hospital when needed..it is very fulfilling to be able to communicate with the hard of hearing..especially when they are very anxious and frustrated in a hospital setting..
