Jailbreaking your iPhone is now officially legal and not a break of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA) (if you are outside of the USA, this does not matter anyhow).

The easiest way to do this, is to go to:

http://www.jailbreakme.com/

After that you can use the application called Cydia in order to install apps Apple does not like (e.g. a games in which you can throw shoes at George W. Bush and other stuff). However, apps you install are not checked anymore by Apple - so you should only install apps you trust.

You can also install apps to unlock your sim card.

Often you are having problems after you contract runs out when you want to use a different network/sim card.

T-Mobile for example will tell you they have unlocked it and Apple will tell you, T-Mobile hasn't, it is Apple fault.

I have been waiting for weeks to unlock my iPhone officialle. As it takes too long I have decided to unlock it myself.

Hiya, If you download a programme onto your comp called " Cydia " and go through the processes this should work, It worked for me as I bought my iPhone off eBay and it was locked to o2.... Try it

Wow... I'll have to get an iPhone now. I'm sure it'll give me that extra half-inch-reach when i stand on it to grab the bars of an old-school stone jail cell window opening...!

However if you download any of this stuff, Apple might just choose to delete it when you next sync your iPhone with your mac/pc.

Also, they have a nasty habit of breaking peoples iPhones if they detect that they are being used on another network other than the licensed one.

Phone networks can also lock the phone if u use it on a diff network. 3 wont let any phone bought from a diff network on their network. I got a phone that was unlocked from new. I tried to use it on 3 and i got a msg saying they will lock the phone if i carried on using it on their network. When they lock the phone u might as well bin it cause it wont work on any network after that. Think they shut down the chips in the phone so it wont work.

That's just because it's a 2G phone, I've used several phones on 3 that weren't bought on their network.

It was a 4G phone or HSPDA which is faster than 3G. 3 sold the same phone in the shop. 3 has switched from 3G to 4G now. All the other networks r still switching to 3G. I went into the 3 shop to ask why they wont let me use my unlocked phone. They said if i carry on using a phone i didnt buy from them they will block it. 3 is the best fastest and cheapest network in the UK but they have 0 tollerence to ppl using phones they didnt sell. Mainly cause it doesnt have their software on it and u can bypass the sites they have blocked. IE U have to pay for age verification to use adult sites. an unlocked phone bypasses that. All carphone warehouse phones come unlocked to any network But they warn u that 3 wont accept them Unless u put their software on them. Not all phones sold by 3 r 3G. They sell 2G as well.

Odd as I have a phone that I bought on Orange and use on 3 and one that I bought on tmobile that I have used on there as well with no warnings, Considering they do sim free deals that seems peculiar. And that's not 4g it's 3.5 Wink

Think their staff might just be lacking as I found this on their site

Setting up an iPhone for our network.

If you have a non-Three iPhone (3G, 3GS or 4*) you can use it on our network. Just follow these steps:

1. Insert a Three SIM into your iPhone. Find out more about how to do this here.
2. Make sure you have iTunes on your computer. You can download it from www.itunes.com/download. Start iTunes on your computer, connect your iPhone to your computer using the USB cable that came in the box with your iPhone. Follow the on screen instructions.
3.

To get the 3 settings automatically you need to update the operating system on your iPhone to iOS 4. For more information you can find more help here.
4.

Once you've updated to iOS 4 you'll automatically get the settings for internet and MMS (picture and video messages), so you won't need to enter them manually. If you find that for some reason they don't update automatically you can find more help here.

*If you want to use a non-Three iPhone 4, you’ll need to give us a call free on 333 from a Three phone or 0843 373 3333 (5p/min from a BT landline, other networks may vary) to request a 3G micro-SIM

If you haven't upgraded to iSO 4 you can enter the settings manually. Find out howhttp://ask3.three.co.uk/mobiledocs/iphone/iso3_three_settings_screen_shots.htm

That kind of agrees with what you said about having to use their software maybe, although not sure, but definitely shows that you can use other networks iphones

3 don't sell 2g and I'm fairly sure never have, every sim card I've had from them has had a warning that if you use it in a 2g phone they will cut it off. That stems from the deal they had with o2 to provide 2g fallback cover when they started out.

What happens if I put my SIM in a 2G mobile?

We don't support 2G mobile phones on our network. If your SIM does initially connect to the network in a 2G mobile it will be detected after a short period, will be updated, and will no longer work.

They do support 2G. The LG veiwty is 2G and 3 sell it. But ur restricted to what u can use it for. Not all features work on it on 3. I got a sony ericsson K530i from carphone warehouse and put a 3 sim in it. 3 sell that phone as well. But i could not get the settings for it and 3 refused to let me have them. Thats when they told me they will lock the phone if they find out im still using their sim in a phone i didnt buy from them. I could only use it in roming mode on 3 and no internet or mms. The viewty had the same problem on 3 even though i got it from them. But thats cause it was 2G not 3G. Ur right HSPDA is 3.5G its UMTS thats 4G lol. My new 3 phone uses that when i can get it. Its usually on 3G though.
