Hello all.

Signed up last night. Found the 'favourites' lists and thought it's a nice touch, so let's see.

Favourite actors - easy, there are two great stars I'll watch in anything:

Harvey Keitel
Jodie Foster

Errr - not there. Never mind, onto TV - think of my favourite series I love and talk about with friends all the time:

West Wing
Homicide Life on the Street
Green Wing

Hmmm - not there either - . Never mind, onto musicians - lots more common ground there:

Peter Gabriel
Janis Ian
Rickie Lee Jones
Heart

Ouch. This really isn't looking good for finding people with similar tastes. Maybe I should start lying about myself. No, can't do that. Anyway, can't go wrong with authors. There are so many acknowledged greats. My pick:

Umberto Eco
Julian Barnes
Marge Piercy
HG Wells

Right, I give up. I know I have eclectic tastes - I'll try anything and only then decide if I like it. I'm also known as a distinct oddball because of my humour and tastes but surely, somebody out there must like SOMETHING I like???

Crying or Very sad

Christopher

Unfortunately, you’re quite right, a lot of the choices in the ‘favourites’ are pretty mainstream and perhaps only a handful of some of the options might appeal to those who have more eclectic taste in music, literature, etc. I also found the options offered in the favourites a little out of my usual range and didn’t bother using any of them (although I was surprised to see Die Toten Hosen in the list), but added a short list here and there in the 'Stuff I Like' section. Elaborating a little on your preferences in the expanded profile section (under the Stuff I Like section) might be a good idea, as not all FB members use the forum, so the chances of them seeing your list here (above) is pretty slim.

Whilst having ‘common interests’ such as music, books, etc plays a small parting how interested someone might be in you on a site like this, these things are something that 2 people rarely have 100% common ground, and the lack of a specific common interest in (say) a number of bands might actually add to the potential relationship, as there might be something ‘new’ to share with the other person, rather than just sharing the things that you already have in common.

To be honest, I don’t think that your preference in music, tv books or actors is going to play as an important a role in initial contact as you might think, people are more likely to base any decision as to whether they contact you (or respond) based on how your profile is presented (i.e. articulate, interesting, humorous, etc).

Is that so?

Did you miss me because of my impartial and enlightening comments on topics such as ‘is it just me or…..’ and my witty banter in topics such as ‘Hello Again’? Or because of my flirtatious behaviour in the Dating forum? Or was it something else? New thread welcome Laughing

I know I don’t spend much time here anymore, afraid my free time is spent ‘elsewhere’. (‘Elsewhere’ meaning undivided attention given to a rather cute blonde lady down in Cornwall - vital statistics available on request - not a Flirtbox romance I hasten to add)

Back on topic………perhaps someone else would like to contribute to the original thread topic or my comments on the relevance (or irrelevance) of common ground when it comes to music, actors, tv shows, etc?

Have to totally agree with this, yes what someone has on there profile plays a small part, but Music and such like doesn't matter at all really .......... opposites atract as the old saying goes .............. for me what they type in there initial contact me via PM is much more important ........... a message such as 'hi how you doing' is not something i would respond to ........... It would have to be original and full of humour and banter for me ......... but as i am 'off the market' for the forseeable future, it would be pointless at the mo either way ............. lol x
