Oh I can feel a whole new thread coming on !

Problem with Scots gaelic is that it can vary from coast to coast. Highland Perthshire dialect is riddled with old gaelic words and the same goes for lowland areas. Causes all sorts of problems for incoming cultures such as the polish influx but in time you not only get used to it by end up speaking like a native in no time.

Place names can be great fun though. Direct translations into old Scots or localised Gaelic throw up some fairly colourful results. I live in ' The place of the wild goats ' ! Very Happy

Well its probably in the North, the two areas are quite close geographically. There's a lot of similarities im told between Irish and Scots Gaelic. I don't know how close the two languages are, Im a fluent Irish Speaker but the few times i've tried to listen to Scots Gaelic i didn't really get anything. Mind you i didn't try too hard either, i think it was around the time that ye established the Scottish parliament
