I've tried to introduce a few more interesting topics recently by starting threads in the world issues forum but only a few people go in there. Every day it's the same people posting the same things in the same threads... tedium. |
I think a lot of people avoid certain topics of conversation as they feel their views might be viewed as either controversial or contentious.
Also, to be fair, many of the new threads started by newer members have already been discussed at great length in the past, and those members who have been here a year a more have already beaten these topics to death. In some ways it might be more productive to sometimes revive old threads when there are quite a few new people using the forums, although there are obviously always new topics that could be introduced into the World Issues forum (although those topics do often result in volatile difference of opinion).
Starting new threads is often disappointing Moose - over the past year or so I must have started (or instigated) close to a 100 threads, most of which died an early death, or are now buried under a couple of hundred of other threads. Then again, what one person perceives as a topic of discussion might be boring to the majority - here's one of mine that I randomly picked out, one that you contributed to as well; I thought it had potential, but obviously it didn't. The truth is, it's like trying to find a newspaper that will appeal to a wide range readership. News covered in the Sun might not appeal to broadsheet readers, and vice versa, and someone who thrives on Hello!esque gossip might not have any interest in the technical articles in .Net.
I think if we were all honest, we might agree that we tend to gravitate predominantly towards forum threads frequented by other members that we regard as our peers (intellectually, humour, etc), or those that we have a genuine interest in (whether romantically or as 'friends') and possibly even have a small mental list of other members whose posts we regularly read as a matter of course when we log in. Whilst I myself only visit a handful of the more general drivel-orientated threads now, I do try to at least inject a bit of humour into my posts in those ones, or provoke a bit of thought.
I suppose one of the advantages of having so many diverse forums here is that each will attract certain members, who will use it as their preferred 'newspaper', and peruse the others briefly, possibly more out of curiousity than anything else, to see what other members that they are vaguely familiar with have to say.
Dare I say it? Aw, go on then ..... I think there might also be an element of controlled posting, where people calculatedly formulate their posts and responses in threads and topics that someone they have an interest in often goes. Well, it is a forum attached to a dating site, after all .....

I'm probably the opposite to most on here, I now avoid all the fun threads, and stick to more serious things.
There seems to be a little exclusive club on here that I cant seem to join.
Probably worse then the old clique that used to be joked about on here, by other people then me

Thats the way of the world with forums/message boards Stu, and I wouldn't say there's a lot wrong with it. Often there are a few newbies on the site that hasn't inputted into the subject and can bring new jokes, new angles and new thoughts.
Personally I think its not good when someone says 'done that already' or brings up old threads just to kill the thread. Must be disappointing to new posters who think they are making an explosive entrance to the discussion boards. Although I think its okay to post links to old thread as reference or a bit of fun.
Can be hard work and laborious searching to see if every subject has already been done, especially for a newby who doesn't understand the search facility.

People that post in the same threads saying the same things over and over again, slapping each other
on the back, 'playing kiss chase'. They are predominantly between 20 and 35. As been said they dont like upsetting each other.
These boards badly need an influx of posters over 35
When I look on here now, I only need to look in the same threads, and you have the same people saying the same things.
The discussion board has been labouring on for about a year now.

There are sites out there worse than this, better too if you can handle the reverb.
One of the most ridiculous forums I have seen the posters write (joke) after making a joke just in case you didn't realise. Trolls are not good we all know that, but over sensitive is just as bad.

I put 'playing kiss chase' in single quotes because someone else said it a few months ago on here.
I have been on here longer then the vast majority of posters, when it was very, very busy. From my experience its gone from one extreme to the other.
From very dynamic and fiery, to bit too pally.
But of course we all see things differently

Oi, Jeggae, you’re slipping! You forgot those who constantly give each other an ego boost (oooh, you’re gawjuss! - no, you’re not, you’re as ugly as sin and have no personality whatsoever, no wonder you’re single) and sympathise with each other after a disastrous date (aw, never mind, he’s not worth you anyway) even if when it’s pretty obvious that the person concerned just doesn’t have the social skills to back up their online persona on a real date.
Ooooh, I’m really bitchy again today (and funnily enough, I’m in a good mood
). Actually, I suppose it doesn't bother me all that much, if it did I just bugger off again and come back when it suited me.
Titwhipper brings up a good point though, there are far worse forums than this one, and many far more cliquey (is that a word?). Like my comment elsewhere about finding a 'newspaper that suits every reader', we accept whoever uses the forum for who they are, and if we don't, we tend to gravitate towards the forums and topics where our peers are hanging out.

whens it my turn for an ego boost? cant remember anyone saying these things to me. I get more embarrassing silences. If you can get silences on the net

Yep, there are far worse stu, and its hard to avoid cliques being formed. I am probably part of cliques on some forums. But its probably hard to see or admit you are part of a forum clique.
But we are discussing the problems on these boards
This one has probably got a bit too sycophantic in my opinion.
Maybe sour grapes by me as I cant seem to get in with all the fun

I think the forums are what you make of them.
I know I'm definitely guilty of constantly making jokes out of serious subjects and posting utter crap just for the sake of posting.
And I make no apologies for it.
I have a stressful job and when I've just got home or I've got the odd day off and on the net I don't always feel like putting the world to rights. I would much rather post the thought I just had that has subsequently made me laugh so much coke has come out of nose.
It's nothing intentional on my part as an under 35 to make anyone feel left out.

Don't 'tut tut' me young woman, otherwise I shall subject you to one of my notorious limericks (and those I put in the Poetry thread were cesnored**!) ..... something along the lines of: There was young woman called Vanda, who decided herself to pander, she whipped off her drawers ...... etc etc etc
There are some good points in this thread, and at the end of the day people come here for their own individual reasons, and if the forums meets their needs, that is all that counts - isn't it?
** Ooops, my fingers got mixed up!

Christ! There's some shit swilling round tonight. First its too nice, then people are left out, then there's not enough debate, then....
I must admit I'm surprised at how few people use the forum

I've only just realised that it said coke has come out of choochi0's nose, when I read it earlier I thought it said cake and was some odd joke I didn't quite get.
