I hate being unemployed!!! I lost my job a month ago due to an illness with a friend of mine, had to spend a great deal of time at her side and my manager decided to "let me go".
Since then I have been hunting high and low for work of any kind and all I get is AGENCY, AGENCY, AGENCY, AGENCY...I mean geez, don't companies recruit themselves anymore???
I wouldn't mind except I really can't afford to be unemployed for much longer and these agencies simply call you in to register claiming they have work then you never hear from them again!!! I call them nearly every day, but this shit is pissing me off 'cos all I get is "Thing's are slow right now" or "Can we call you back" (you say yes and you never seem to get that c/b from them).
The fact that the news keeps reporting large companies closing down in Birmingham doesn't help either, it's like "Oh great, another 200 people I have to compete against!"
The Evening Mail has 1, 600 jobs...of which about 20 are any good to me and again they are all agency vacancies!!!

I swear if I had hair I'd be ripping it out by now!!! Smile

Oh I'm sure I will find something. It's just that I really do hate being unemployed. A lot of these companies look down on you when you go to an interview and have been unemployed for more than a week and the jobcentre staff talk to you like you are something that they need to scrape off their shoe!!!

I am actually looking at moving away from this city, and the employment situation is a big reason why...the irony is of course I need a job to get the cash to move away!!! Confused

i know how u feel, i finsihed uni in may graduated in july they always say it is hard to get a jb straight out of uni but the jobs just dont sem to be there or if they are there then there is loads of people applying, im on job seekers and i hate it as its benefits and i dont really like receiving that! The problem is here that i have been trying to get any job to keep me going but there is no joy here either. im looking at moving back to derbyshire (i thought coming here to stay with mum would mean there was a better range of work - there was when i moved here.) moving to derbyshire would mean id be near some mates but i would have to live with my dad till i was stable and that not really what i want. it really gets me down and i dont really know what to do.

I remember I had the same problem when I left college, I was either looking for "just a job" to keep the cash coming in (the managers all said I was over qualified or didn't have the experience) or I was under qualified (in other words they wanted someone out of uni...I was studying for Marine Biology, guess living in Birmingham with no coast didn't help haha). Drove me nuts!!!
I know it's hard but my advice is to avoid agencies as much as possible, they're a waste of space! They use you and abuse you...kinda remind me of an ex...

Anyway good luck Han, keep your head up and stay positive... Very Happy

Its seems this problem is not just in Birmingham! I graduated with 48 other students with little prospect of getting employment due to the ongoing cash crisis in the NHS, which is crazy when they say they are crying out for nurses!!!. But have to say that in my case, Agency work was a god send, it got my face known around the hospitals and i was very fortunate to be offered a job.Only 8 of us, out of that 48 have employment! Good luck to you both in your searches, Im sure a job will come your way.

You're right, its Grimm every where at the moment. I'll be finishing university next year, I'm doing a computer degree as a mature student. I don't think I'll have a queue of prospective employers knocking on my door Sad..and I live not far outside London.
