I've just been thinking that when people are writing their profiles many specify that they are looking for someone who is down-to-earth. My first thoughts are that I'm blown out at the first hurdle, 'cos I'm really a head in the clouds type, but then I start to think, I wonder what that actually means to them! I can keep my head in a crisis, I'm very practical and some would say 'grounded' so, just interested to hear what other peoples thoughts are on this subject Exclamation

So your asking what does down to earth mean to me? beacause i would say that everyones got their own definition......

For me it would mean..... Honest.....Unpretencious...Kind... Understanding...Genuine...

But then 'head in the clouds' doesn't mean a liar necessarily to me.....more 'a dreamer' and theres nothing wrong with that!

Thanks Hugglies that was just the type of thing I wanted to know, 'cos it's a general statement used by many, but I just can't see it meaning the same thing to everybody.

to me 'down to earth' means something like 'I own a Celine Dion LP' or 'I enjoy setting the video for the Eastenders omnibus' or 'I generally complain about the weather, especially when it's hot.' but it can also mean 'I don't have or want someone with a 3 grand credit card debt' or 'I don't want to use more syllables in our conversations than the average market trader' or 'I have an incredible fear of flying."

All of which pretty much rule me out.

down to earth= you understand and appreciate life for all its good and bad points

head in clouds= the time you spend imagining yourself not 'down to earth'..

Now we are defining it -

Down to earth -
Having a beer instead of an overpriced bland lager,
Dating someone instead of having a relationship,
A girlfriend instead of a partner
Arguing instead of having issues,
In fact, saying things how they are instead of using pretend politically correct language
Calling a spade a spade and knowing how to use it
Being able to say "thats a load oa bollox" to some of the rubbish people say

Head in the clouds -
Well, Im not sure really

Yeah good one Kev great way of putting it, but I'm just wondering if that's what I'm doing when I'm painting, imagining that I'm not down to earth? and what when I see spirit? (of the deceased kind) am I 'head in the clouds' then, cos I could say that I'm more 'down to earth' 'cos I can see more things in it.

I don't really call myself that but plenty of others might.

Well im a little more callous in my interpretation of it

Down to earth to me is someone who recognises their circumstances and deals with it. Personally due to my job ill never be able to afford a family, so i've had to make a concious decision between my job and my prospects of a family, and as its happened i've chosen my job. I'll never have or be able to afford a family and through a clinical rationalisation of it i like to think i've made my peace with it. I regret it sometimes, but i think my job is worth it. Others would have made the same choice in that they have set a goal, either family orientated or not, the goal is there and you can work that into a relationship if the partner is honest with you in what they want/expect from life.

Mind you the head in the clouds person simply sigify's to me and in a beautiful way someone who's mind isn't made up yet. As far as a person who's head in the clouds is concered, their life can take any direction yet, and that raw potential is just as attractive as someone who has everything planned. Whilst everyone needs a rock of some sort in a relationship, floating free can be just as fruitfull as well. I guess it depends on how relaxed people are when it comes to love.
