A MAN who raped a severely disabled 24-year-old woman, who cannot walk or talk, is being hunted by police.

The attack was only discovered after doctors realised the woman was pregnant.

Detectives are investigating claims the rape took place while she was receiving respite care in a nursing home.

Doctors made the discovery after examining the woman when she indicated that she had stomach pains.

A relative of the victim, who for legal reasons cannot be named, said today: "Whoever has done this to her is an animal."

The wheelchair-bound victim of the attack is from Bolton, but was at a care home in Bury at the time doctors say she became pregnant.

Family members were worried when she appeared to be distressed and started to vomit. Police were called to investigate when it was confirmed the woman was six months pregnant.

A police spokesman said: "On Thursday, August 24, detectives received a report of rape on a woman in Bury. The investigation is at a very early stage and inquiries are ongoing."

A relative of the victim said: "We are absolutely devastated. What sort of person would do this? She's already been through so much in her life.

"She can't speak, she's wheelchair bound and she's incontinent. We only know when she's hungry or in pain when she starts crying.

"She can't do anything for herself - she's like a baby. We only found out on Thursday that she was six months pregnant.

"She doesn't really have a bump. We thought she'd just put on a bit of weight."

The victim's family have pledged to support her through the birth and said the woman will keep the baby. They are also taking legal advice.

The nursing home is run as a charity. A spokesman for the home said they were unable to comment while police investigations were ongoing.

every time you feel that your head is in the clouds all you have to do is read the papers. brings me back with a thud every time.

i think they are doing right to keep the baby. after all, it didn't ask to be conceived.

It's bad enough an able-bodied woman being raped...but this is just sick.

Sad

She's a braver woman than I am. I wouldn't be able to have a rapists baby.

It isn't neccessarily(sp?) making it right because she's keeping the baby.

And a constant reminder that some filthy perv stole into her room and raped her. Someone even less defensless than the average woman taken by surprise.

I'll say no more AP. We have very differing views on this and would hate to fall out over it.

nodody said she was trying to make it right. for all we know and for that matter for all her family know she doesn't want it. she can't communicate afterall. but i'd like to think if i was in that position i would have the baby and put it up for adoption.

but it's not me.

it's not any of us.

a heated debate is not called for lol

i am just giving my opinion. yes what she went through was horrible, unimaginable, foul and sick. no she will never get over it completely. and yes her family will blame themselves. the staff and other volunteers will blame themselves too. as i said in my first reply. whenever i feel like my head is in the clouds i just have to read a paper.

btw, did anyone see in the papers that an 18 yr old girl got away from her kidnapper yesterday, 8 years after she was kidnapped!??

I wouldn't be able to have a rapists child growing inside of me...I just couldn't do it.

The poor woman is after all 6 months pregnant and at this stage she has no real choice but to go through to the end and there is different ways her family can deal with it. They can decide if a family member will raise the child or the child can also be put up for adoption and give another couple a chance at a family.
